Who are aliens? • Aliens are people who live here but are not citizens • Aliens can be legal or illegal • Aliens who moved here legally and want to become citizens are called immigrants • Illegal Aliens moved here illegally typically from Mexico and may be deported if discovered • Refugees are aliens who have come from countries experiencing: war, famine, oppressive governments and poverty
How do people get here? • Immigration means to move to a different country with the intent of staying there • Migration means to move within a country • People migrate and immigrate because of factors called push and pull • Immigration trends change over the years today immigrants mostly come from Mexico in the past it was mostly Europe • The US limits the number of immigrants through a quota system • Every 10 years the US counts its citizens, called a census
