Today we will review what it means to “cite textual evidence” RL. 7. 1

Today we will review what it means to “cite textual evidence” RL. 7. 1 / RL. 8. 1 — Cite textual evidence to support analysis of a text. We need to be able to “cite textual evidence” at an academic level

WHAT: • “Textual Evidence” refers to when the writer provides quotes from the text

WHAT: • “Textual Evidence” refers to when the writer provides quotes from the text that backup a specific analysis. • When answering an essay or test question, the writer has to provide examples from the story/article to prove their point. • “Evidence” is exactly that — pieces of proof that come from the source material! WHY: • Enhances your argument for a question or essay topic. • Shows the reader examples from the text so they can understand your perspective better. • Shows the reader examples just in case they haven’t read the same information as you.

SUMMARY QUOTES WHAT: Where you take the ideas from the story and you put

SUMMARY QUOTES WHAT: Where you take the ideas from the story and you put them into your own words. Where you take out parts of the original text and incorporate it into your own writing. (i. e. , you quote the novel/article/source material) WHY: To quickly express ideas to the reader or to put things in your own writing so you’re not copying. WHY: To show the reader specific examples of what you’re referring to.

Question: Is Ponyboy Curtis considered to be a brave and “tough” kid compared to the other kids in the Greaser gang? Summary Answer (rudimentary): In the short novel, The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton, Ponyboy Curtis is a young delinquent teenager who rides with the Greaser gang in a small town. Ponyboy Curtis often wonders if he is an asset to the Greaser gang because he does not always act as fierce as some of the other members. In the story, Ponyboy is jumped by several rival gang members known as the Socs. After they beat him up and Ponyboy is rescued by his friends, Ponyboy sits on the curb of the street and begins to fight back tears because he is not as tough as the other Greaser gang members. This proves his weakness as a Greaser because he is not able to hold his own in a fight. Quote the text Answer: In the short novel, The Outsiders, by S. After being saved by his friends, Ponyboy rests on the curb of the street and treats his bleeding face, and tells the reader, “if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl” (Hinton 8). Ponyboy begins to cry and shake “like a leaf” because he was truly scared of getting jumped by the rival Soc gang. Ponyboy was not able to defend himself as well as the other Greasers, so he had a hard time recovering from the attack. Overall, Ponyboy is a tough member of the Greaser gang, but he is far from being the bravest or most dangerous; on the inside, Ponyboy Curtis is still very much a child. Co Pr ns os

THE OUTSIDERS (CHAPTER 1 –PAGE 8): “…if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. I knew I was as white as I felt and I was shaking like a leaf. ” THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: 1) I have to introduce this quote somehow… 2) I have to talk about how this quote relates to the question I’m trying to answer… 3) I have to make sure I use the quote properly…

DO: DO use quotes! DON’T: DO NOT put a quote in your essay/paragraph as a freestanding sentence. Do provide context for the reader DO NOT misquote or misspell the text. DO cut down quotes to fit your essay. DO NOT throw in too many quotes into your essay/paragraph. DO lead-in to the quote to introduce it somehow. DO NOT change the quote (unless you use proper punctuation/brackets to indicate you’re changing it somehow). DO explain the relevance of your quote DO NOT quote entire blocks of text, or quote too much in your essay! DO NOT end a body paragraph with a quote!

Leading into a quote can definitely be a challenge for some. Let’s look at

Leading into a quote can definitely be a challenge for some. Let’s look at an example of how to do it: THE OUTSIDERS (CHAPTER 1 –PAGE 8): “…if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. I knew I was as white as I felt and I was shaking like a leaf. ” Simple Way: In the story, Ponyboy says, “if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. ” Better: In Chapter 1, Ponyboy Curtis sits on the curb of the street and mentions to the reader, “if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. ” Best: Early on in Chapter 1, Ponyboy Curtis sits on the curb of the street and mentions to the reader that he was “starting to bawl” while he was “shaking like a leaf. ”

Question: Once you use a quote, what do you do next? Is Ponyboy Curtis

Question: Once you use a quote, what do you do next? Is Ponyboy Curtis considered to be a brave and “tough” kid compared to the other kids in the Greaser gang? THE OUTSIDERS (CHAPTER 1 –PAGE 8): “…if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. I knew I was as white as I felt and I was shaking like a leaf. ” Simple Way: In Chapter 1, Ponyboy Curtis sits on the curb of the street and mentions to the reader, “if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. ” This shows that Ponyboy isn’t as tough as the other Greasers because he is beginning to cry. Advanced Way: In Chapter 1, Ponyboy Curtis sits on the curb of the street and candidly tells the reader, “if you want to know the truth, I was starting to bawl. ” While Ponyboy acts like a tough member of the Greaser gang, he struggles to fight back tears and breaks down in front of the whole group. Ponyboy’s tough appearance fades because he was unable to conceal his emotions over what he had just experienced.

Ponyboy reveals how tough he really is when he confesses, “If you want to

Ponyboy reveals how tough he really is when he confesses, “If you want to know the truth…. ” Ponyboy is not as tough as the other Greasers. In the text it says, “If you want to know the truth…. ”

While Ponyboy acts like a tough member of the Greaser gang, he struggles to

While Ponyboy acts like a tough member of the Greaser gang, he struggles to fight back tears and breaks down in front of the whole group. I chose this quote because it shows how Ponyboy is not tough.

Question — Chapter 4 (Pony/Johnny get jumped) How does Ponyboy feel about what Johnny did to Bob (the Soc that almost drowned Pony)? How does Ponyboy’s perception of Johnny change in this chapter?
