• To avail the services provided by UCS Central UCSM needs to be registered with the UCS Central. • Admin must provide the shared secret configured on the UCS central to register the UCSM with the UCS central. • The UCSM then registers with the UCS Central. • Registration process may put a UCS into a particular domain-group, if there is membership policies defined • Switching between UCS Central is not allowed without unregistering from the one UCS-Central and registering with other. © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. UCS Central UCSM At Registration: 1. Registration initiated by “admin” on UCS Manager 2. Requires UCS Central IP or DNS name 3. Secure process through the use of Shared Secret After Registration: 1. All policies for the domain group take effect at registration, depending on the policy controls 2. All resources from the local pools are tracked globally, to detect /avoid conflicts 3. IDs in the Global Pools become available for use in the domain Bulk Registration: 1. Registrations can be done through the XML API 2. Scripts can be written with lists of UCS Domain IP addresses to bulk register © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 20

• UCS initiates the registration by providing shared-secret of UCS-Central • UCS domain receives certificate from UCS Central • UCS domain requests for GUID • No existing GUID, so it’s a fresh registration • Registration continues with new UCS Central by passing UCS domain information to new UCS Central • UCS Domain receives the UCS-Central registry app and other providers information • UCS Domain resolves global-policies (if configured) from new UCS Central © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 23
• You can unregister UCSM from UCS Central from the UCSM GUI • Unregister request is sent to UCS Central • UCSM will release information about the various service providers on UCS Central • All communication channels between UCS-central and UCS are closed • All local cleanups are performed without relying on any success response from UCS Central (there could be a possibility that existing UCS Central is not reachable) © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. • It is single registration point for all other services and clients (UCSM) • All the services i. e. IDM, OM, PM and RM register themselves with this service. • After registration of the services is complete, the service registry distributes this information with all the services registered on it. • The services are also updated with information about the clients. • The clients are updated about the services registered with the service registry. © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. • It provides centralized management for UUIDs, MAC addresses, WWPN/WWNN, IP addresses and IQN numbers across UCSM systems/domains. • IDM helps in avoiding conflicts with identities by tracking pool assignments and managing them. • If there are conflicting identities then the IDM will raise a fault. • UCSM notifies the IDM about any local identity pools and identity assignments. • On the UCSM, IDM assigned identities are treated as end point address (similar to manually entered) to differentiate IDM IDs from local pool IDs. • IDM allows two UCSM to have same IP if it is marked as private IP © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. • It pulls the basic inventory from registered UCSMs • Displays summary about physical and logical UCS components. • Provides a central data center wide health status for UCS systems. • Physical components are FI, IOM, Chassis, Servers, etc. • Logical components are Service profile, Service profile templates • Provides ability to launch UCSM GUI for registered UCS systems • Provides a summarized view of faults • By default it collects UCS inventory from each registered UCSM every 10 minutes and faults every 1 minute. © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates. • It’s an enhanced web server used to configure policies, pools and templates. • The organization structure that contains these objects is owned and managed by policy server. • ID pools, templates, and domain groups are defined in the Policy Manager. • These are then distributed selectively to appropriate services. • ID pools are distributed to IDM. • Domain groups are distributed to Resource Manager © 2011 Cisco and/or its affiliates.
