What is cirrhosis? A chronic disease of the liver characterized by a degeneration of cells, inflammation, and fibrous thickening of tissue
Risk Factors Environmental factors: Infection Smoking Toxins Other factors: Age (30 -60) Genetics Sex (more common in women)
Causes Hepatitis C Fatty liver (obesity, diabetes) Most common causes Alcohol abuse Blockage of the bile duct Reactions to drugs, toxins, and parasites (less likely)
Signs and Symptoms ● Jaundice (yellow skin) ● Bleeding and bruising easily ● Swelling in the legs ● Spider like blood vessels on skin ● Hepatic encephalopathy ● Nausea and loss of appetite ● Weight loss ● Symptoms of cirrhosis do not often show themselves until the liver has already
Treatments ● Alternative treatments: Milk thistle, licorice root (glycyrrhizin), schisandra and astragalus ○ There is not enough evidence to say these actually work ○ Some may even be harmful ● Treatment for Cirrhosis often involves treating the causes of Cirrhosis over the actual disease ● There also ways to manage the symptoms such as treating an infection with antibiotics ● In extreme cases liver transplants can be done
