Circulatory System Problems affect the heart blood vessels
Circulatory System Problems **affect the heart, blood vessels, and blood Anemia- a condition in which the number of healthy red blood cells is low or the amount of iron in the red blood cells is low --some kinds of anemia can be passed from parents to children Cause Effect *too little iron **feeling tired (the most common form) **looking pale *low number of red blood cells ANEMIA *lack of certain vitamins *exposure to dangerous chemicals
high blood pressure (hypertension)-- a disease in which blood is pumped through the arteries with more force than is needed to move through the body --can damage your heart, brain, blood vessels, and other organs --often called the "silent killer" because most people have no symptoms warning them about the disease --children rarely have high blood pressure Cause Effect *blood is pumped with too much force through the arteries **hypertension (high blood pressure) **stroke
Atherosclerosis- a disease in which fatty substances in our blood build up on the inside walls of our arteries --decreases the flow of blood through the arteries Cause Effect *fatty substances build up on the inside walls of arteries and block arteries **heart attack **stroke
Heart Attack Cause Effect *artery carrying blood to **some cells in the heart is blocked die from lack of oxygen (heart attack) Stroke Cause Effect *artery carrying blood to **some cells in the brain is blocked die from lack of oxygen (stroke)
Preventing Circulatory System Problems 1. maintain a healthy weight --fruits, vegetable, and grain products should make up most of your diet --do NOT eat a lot of high-fat foods 2. eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dry beans that are rich in iron to prevent the most common form of anemia 3. get plenty of exercise 4. stay away from marijuana, cocaine, nicotine tobacco products, and carbon monoxide in smoke from tobacco products --these cause changes in the way the body works --they are not good for your circulatory system or the rest of your body
