Circulatory System Mr. Oles = ? ? !!!
Purpose of the Circulatory System • The purpose of the circulatory system is to transport various nutrients and waste products around our body (Ex. UPS)
The Heart • 1. There are four main chambers of the heart! – Right Atrium – Right Ventricle – Left Atrium – Left Ventricle
The Heart • Valves in the heart are important because they keep blood from flowing backwards and causing a heart attack
The Heart • The heart is controlled by a bundle of nerves called the pacemaker
The Pulse • When you measure your pulse, you are measuring the RATE that your heart is contracting – or beating. • Because arteries expand contract for every time the heart beats or sends a pulse of blood if you count the number of pulses in a minute you are actually counting this…
Pipelines • Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the body. • Capillaries deliver oxygen to every cell and pick up the carbon dioxide. • Veins bring the oxygen-deprived but carbon dioxide-loaded blood back to the heart. * Except for the Pulmonary Vein.
Arteries • Arteries have smooth muscle in them…why? • Hint: the muscles in your arteries relax when you exercise.
The Circuit • Pulmonary Circuit – heart to lungs and back. • Systemic Circuit – heart to body and back.
The Circuit • Blood moves from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. Blood then travels to ALL the cells of the body and returns to the heart.
Blood 1. The four major components of blood are red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma
Blood • Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide in their hemoglobin, which is a protein that contains iron.
Blood • White blood cells attack invaders in several ways.
Blood • Platelets aid in the clotting process by helping to create fibrin, which releases fibers across a blood vessel wall in order to stop the bleeding.
Blood • Plasma is the liquid part of blood, it transports dissolved nutrients and wastes BLOOD
Blood Facts • Your body pumps 5 liters or 1. 3 gallons each minute
Blood Facts • Your heart beats about 70 to 85 times per minute • Heart rate: 250 beats/min resting; 1200 beats/min feeding
Pulmonary Stenosis
Blood Path Paragraph • Imagine you are a: Red Blood Cell; White Blood Cell; or, Platelet. • Write a clear, concise, legible paragraph, or two, detailing: – Your path through the body beginning at the right atrium. – Your job within the body(ie. Carrying O 2 or CO 2, protecting from infection, or repairing cuts or tears). Be creative & use your imagination!!!
Blood Path Paragraph • • 10 points total 5 Points – Path through the body 3 Points – Your job (as a WBC, RBC…) 2 Points – Spelling, grammar, punctuation
