FUNCTIONS OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Transport many important substances, such as oxygen and nutrients. Carries disease fighting material. Contains cell fragments and proteins for blood clotting. Distributes heat throughout the body to regulate body temperature.
BLOOD VESSELS Arteries: Carried away from the heart – oxygenated blood. Capillaries: Arteries branch into smaller vessels, arterioles which become smaller and forming capillaries (microscopic blood vessels) Veins: Capillaries form again larger vessels called venules and forming larger vessels called Veins – carry oxygen poor blood (deoxygenated blood)
THE HEART Structure of Heart – See Page 253 – Figure 3. Blood flow through the body – See Figure 4 – Page 254. Explanation on Pages 253 -254.
BLOOD COMPONENTS Plasma: Clear yellowish fluid portion of blood (50% of blood) 95% water. Red Blood Cells: Carry oxygen to all the body’s cells – have hemoglobin. Platelets: Cell fragments important in forming blood clots. White blood cells: Fighting diseases in the body. Less than red blood cells.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM DISORDERS Atherosclerosis: Blocked arteries, reduce oxygen-rich and nutrient-rich blood flow. Vessels can burst, because the heart must work extra hard.
