Circulatory System Human Body Systems
Circulatory System Main Function: Transport blood to all parts of the body so that gases, nutrients, and waste products are transported to and from the cells. Main Organs: Heart: Causes blood to circulate through the body by its pumping action Blood Vessels: Tubes that carry blood throughout the entire body Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries
Blood Vessels Arteries: Carry blood that has oxygen and nutrients to all the parts of the body Veins: Carry waste products (like Carbon Dioxide) from all parts of the body back to the heart. Capillaries: Very small vessels where the exchange of oxygen and nutrients from the blood into the cells and carbon dioxide and other waste products enter the blood from the cells.
Blood Red Blood Cells: Take oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to cells through the body. White Blood Cells: The body’s disease fighters They alert the body to foreign objects, like bacteria, and help the body fight off diseases. Platelets: Cell fragments that help form blood clots. When a blood vessel is cut, platelets collect and stick to the vessel at the wound. Plasma: Carries nutrients, such as glucose, fats, vitamins, and minerals, carries chemical messengers that tell your cells what they need to do, carries away most of the waste products cells produce.
