About the Circulatory System The Circulatory System, also known as the Cardiovascular System, is a system working to bring nutrients and oxygen to all the cells in our bodies. It also takes carbon dioxide and waste away from the cells. The gases, nutrients, and wastes all travel in our blood. Some parts of the circulatory system include the heart, arteries, blood vessels, and veins. The word Cardiovascular means "to do with the heart and the blood vessels as a whole"- just as the words pulmonary and systemic mean "to do with the lungs" and "to do with a system"
Heart The heart is like a pump that sends blood through our bodies with each heartbeat. When it does, the heart brings oxygen to all the cells. The heart has four chambers: • Right atrium receives blood from the vein and pumps it in the right ventricle. • Right ventricle receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the lungs, where it is loaded with oxygen. • The left atrium receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it over to the left ventricle. • The left ventricle, which is the strongest chamber, pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. The left ventricle’s powerful contractions create our blood pressure.
Arteries & Veins Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. • Arteries are red blood vessels, whereas veins are blue • Arteries are deeper into the body, whereas veins are closer to the skin • Arterial walls are more rigid, whereas veins have collapsible walls
Blood Vessels Blood vessels are vessels in the body in where blood circulates. Arteries and veins are blood vessels. Arteries branch out into tiny, thin blood vessels called capillaries. Capillaries are thin vessels that connect the arterioles and the venules. • Arterioles are very small branches of arteries. • Venules are very small branches that collect the blood from various organs and parts. • Arterioles and venules form together to make veins. • Capillaries are where nutrients and wastes are exchanged between the blood and body tissues.
Fun Facts • In the average human, about 2, 000 gallons (7, 572 liters) of blood travel daily through 60, 000 miles (96, 560 kilometers) of blood vessels. • In the average adult, there's 5 to 6 quarts (4. 7 to 5. 6 liters) of blood. • The Circulatory System moves lymph, as well as blood. Lymph is a clear fluid that helps rid the body of unwanted wastes and other materials. • The heart beats about 2. 5 billion times in the average human lifetime. • A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s heart, at a rate of 78 times per minute ( men's’ hearts beat 70 times per minute).
Questions 1. What is lymph? 2. What does cardiovascular mean? 3. What do capillaries connect? 4. How many chambers does the heart have? 5. What is the difference between arteries and veins? 6. What are systemic and pulmonary?
Answers 1. Lymph is a clear fluid that gets rid of the body's unwanted materials. 2. To do with the heart and the blood vessels, as a whole. 3. Capillaries connect arterioles and the venules. 4. Four (4) chambers 5. Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins carry blood back to the heart. 6. Pulmonary means to do with the lungs, and systemic means to do with a system.
