Circles Project – Gems By Miah Gamauh Credits to Philippa, Yazmin and Ilirjana
Research – Iris Egbers • The main focus point of the image is the models face and outfit. This is evident as the photographer has taken a full body shot. • The depth of field within this image is wide, this is evident as the whole image is in focus. • The lighting within this image is very dark/dull. However, the clothing that the model is wearing is quite vibrant which therefore makes her stand out. Also the colour of her hair stands out more as she has been placed against a grey background therefore giving the image more character. • The style of this photo-shoot fashion/beauty due to to the main focus being on the models face and clothing. This is evident as the background is very dark which therefore brings the attention directly to the models attire. I like this image as it is very unique and powerful. For example, the way in the which the model has posed gives a fierce feelings towards the image. As if she is making a statement. The way in which the lighting was set up has most definitely impacted the mood of the image, meaning it has created a more fierce kind of look due to it being dark and sort of mystical.
Research – Iris Egbers • The main focal point in this image is the models face, reason being is that it is more of a head shot than a full body shot. • The depth of field within this image is wide, this is evident as the whole image is in focus. • The lighting within this image is also very dull. However the gems used on the models face are quite bright but not overpowering. They are quite deep colours which keep theme of the three images quite the same. • The colour of the scarf matches the gems on the models face also which gives us a sense of consistency. • The style of this photo-shoot fashion/beauty but more of a beauty shot due to it being mainly focused on the models face. All the attention directly goes to her face as the scarf she is wearing is quite simple which therefore allows us to identify this image as a beauty shot. I like this image as the stylist has kept the colours of the gems and scarf the same which keeps the image neat, meaning that when you look at the image you don’t feel as though too much is going on. The dark background compliments the model as it makes her sound out more in the sense that the colours she is wearing are quite overpowering. The position of which the gems are positioned on the models face also bring the picture together.
Research – Iris Egbers • The main focus of this image is the models face, this is evident as the image been cropped just below her shoulders. Her neck/shoulders are bare meaning that the main focus is what is going on on her face. • The depth of field of this image is shallow, meaning that the models face is sharper than the rest of her body. • The lighting within this image is also very dull. However the gems used on the models face are quite bright but not overpowering. They are quite deep colours which keep theme of the three images quite the same. • Also the use of broad lighting gives the image more character. • The style of this photo-shoot fashion/beauty but more of a beauty shot due to it being mainly focused on the models face and due to the image being cropped just below her shoulders. With her not wearing clothes in this image therefore makes it evident that her face is where the photographer/stylist wanted all the attention to go to. I like this image as it is the most elegant one of out the three. The model not wearing clothing in this image has an impact on the feel of the image. It allows the viewer to give all their attention to the gems on her face and also the makeup. The colours of the models hair and the gems stand out more as there is no other colour in the image. The position of which the model is sitting in, therefore gives a broad lighting affect which gives the image itself more character.
Claus Wickrath • The main focus of this image is the models face, purely her makeup. This is evident due to the way in which the photo has been cropped. • The depth of field of this image is shallow, meaning that her face is the sharpest and the background is more out of focus. This instantly brings all attention to the models face. • The lighting is very bright however the photographer has kept the background of the images slightly darker to emphasise the detail in the females face. By doing this, this then allows the crystals and eye makeup to stand out more. • The style of this photo-shoot is beauty due to the shot being only of the models face, meaning that all the attention is to be directed to the makeup. I like this image because the photographer/stylist has kept it very simple. Meaning that there isn't too much going on within the image, the main focus is purely on the makeup. This is evident as the model has been placed on quite a light background and the makeup being quite dark – this immediately directs the viewers eyes to the models face. The red and black around the models eyes enhance the brown colour of her eyes. Which also brings the viewers attention directly to the centre of the image, where the models eyes are.
Claus Wickrath • The main focus of this image is the models face. This is evident due to the way in which the photo has been cropped (above her shoulders) • The depth of field within this image is wide. This is evident as the whole image is in focus. • The lighting in this image isn’t too harsh, meaning the background is quite dull but the models face is quite bright which allows us to see all the detail in the makeup very clearly. • The colours of the makeup stand out – this is due to the background of the photo being grey whereas the models face is quite pale and the makeup used is dark. • The style of this photoshoot is beauty due to the image being cropped above the models shoulder, therefore showing us that the main focus is made to be directed to the face/makeup. I like this image because it has been kept quite simple but the image still is very powerful. The colour silver compliments the models skin as it isn't too harsh. The black then stands out much more as the model is quite pale and the silver isn't a strong colour. This therefore enhances the detail of the shape created with the black colour. With the background being grey, this then allows the outline of the model to look more sharp as you can tell that she was positioned in-front of the backdrop instead of being edited onto one.
Claus Wickrath • The main focus of this image is the models eye makeup. This is evident from the way in which the image has been cropped. • The depth of field within this image is shallow, this is evident because the right eye is out of focus whereas the left eye is more sharp. • The lighting of this image is again bright as the models face is very pale. The background is grey which allows us to see a clear outline of the bone structure of the models face. It also compliments the colour of them gems and makeup. • The eye makeup is very dramatic which therefore proves that the main focus of the image is the models eye. This is also evident because the lip colour used on the model is very natural, this is so that it doesn't overpower the eye makeup. • The style of this photoshoot is beauty. This is evident due to the cropped of the image and also the eye makeup being the main focus of the image. I like this image as it is very simple but elegant. The colours within the image work well together which keeps the image neat, meaning that there isn't a lot going on which also is very pleasing to the viewers eyes. The photographer was successful in making the makeup the main focus of the image as they kept the background darker but not black as that would then blend too much with the eye makeup.
Alex Box • The main focus of this image is the models face. This is evident from the way in which the lighting has been set up. • The depth of field within this image is shallow, this is evident because the models face is the only thing that is in focus whereas the background is more out of focus. • The lighting in this image is broad. This therefore gives the image more character in the sense that it gives the image a more mythical feel. It also brings out the detail of the makeup on the models face. It also makes her look fierce. • The use of a dark background also enhances the details on her face as it allows it to stand out more. This is because the makeup is white and having a black/grey background doesn't distract the eye. The image has been kept very simple in terms of the colours used. • The way in which the model has been positioned to the right hand side of the image also gives the image more character. I like this photo because it is mythical. Due to the way in which the lighting is set up. It has a massive impact on the character.
Alex Box • The main focus of this image is the models face, this is evident as the model has been positioned in the centre of the image. Her eyes also being the centre of the image which there directs the viewers eyes directly to hers. • The depth of field within this image is shallow, this is evident as the models face is more sharper than the background. • The lighting in this image has a blue tint, which also makes the pearls on the women face blue. This therefore gives the image more character in the sense that she looks sort of like a sea creature. Therefore making the image look more mythical. • The way in which her chin is lifted and her lips are slightly opened, make her look powerful. • The style of this photoshoot is beauty due to it being a close up image of the models face which proves that the main focus is her makeup and the pearls. I like this image as it has a lot of character. Meaning, the model looks sort of like a mermaid. The colour of the pearls compliment the colour of her hair. Also the use of the darker blue background work with the blue tint of the pearls. The blue starts off at the top of the image as a darker blue and then fades into a lighter blue which therefore allows the models hair colour to stand out more. The use of broad lighting also brings the image together. The shadow under the models chin allows us to identify that the light source was most probably above her head.
Alex Box • The main focus of this image is the makeup on the models face. This is evident due to the way in which the image has been captured and cropped. • The depth of field on this image is shallow, this is evident ask the background of the image is less in focus than the model herself. This therefore allows the viewer to focus immediately on the females face (crystals and eye makeup). • The lighting in this image is bright however the photographer has kept the background darker to emphasise the detail in the models face. For example, in one of the images, the photographer has used a dark blackish background as the model has been painted white. This then brings out the detail in her face and gives the image more character. It also creates a mythical creature look. • The style of this photo-shoot beauty due to it being a close up image of the models face. Even though it isn’t an makeup look, it would still come underneath this category. Out of all three images, I would say that my favourite image is the 2 nd picture. Reason being, the use of a more blue light compliments the females face structure and also her ginger hair. It also changes the look of the pearls on her face in comparison to the two other images where it has been kept more dull and the model has been painted white.

Moodboard
Concept I have chosen to use gems to represent circles within the image. Reason being, I wanted to carry out a studio look photo-shoot and use circle gems to create a ‘crystal make-up’ look. I wanted my first piece to clearly show the circles without the viewer having to think about the image. I wanted this piece to be more about beauty and makeup instead of there being a deeper meaning behind the image. I decided to choose three girls that had completely different hair colours and complexions to make the images more interesting.
Behind the Scenes
Editing process Sharpen eye and add clarity to enhance definition Used the ‘Dodge’ tool to enhance the detail of the makeup Vignette background to give the image more character Add clarity and used ‘Burn’ tool to enhance the detail of the eye make-up Add saturation to lips Added clarity Removed spots to make the skin more clearer
Reflection In my opinion, I feel as though my final piece is successful in portraying circles as I went for a more straight forward and obvious approach towards the images (with the gems representing the circles). I also feel that my final piece is successful as the outcome was exactly how I pictured it in my head – The positioning of the gems and the poses that the girls were in. Initially I didn’t plan for my images to be set out in a collage. I was originally going to present them as individual images, like so: However after playing around with some layouts, I had then decided that I wanted to put my images into a collage as if felt it brought the whole piece together. I was overly happy with the way in which the lighting came out and also I was happy with the way I had edited the images as I felt that I kept it as natural as possible even though I had made changes (enhancing detail to hair, makeup, eyes, gems and also getting rid of spots on their girls skin whilst slightly smoothing their skin without making it look unnatural) This further explains why I feel as though my final piece is successful.
