Dashboard Reporting
Visual Data Discovery • Visual data discovery tools speed the time to insight through the use of visualizations, drag and drop interface, and easy exploration. 3
Why Visual Data Discovery? • Traditional analysis required knowing the question you are trying to answer before you start Versus Visual Data Discover allows you to form (and answer) questions as you go. • Empowering everyone – not just select super-users or IT - to find outliers, nuances and trends in their data 4
What are Portal Dashboard Reports? • Users start with an underlying data cube that contains records on a particular area of interest and create multiple data visualizations • Dashboards can combine various types of graphs, maps and data tables. Often a selection made in one area of the dashboard will change the view of the data in another area. • Portal analyst users can create or modify existing dashboards or they can be built with the help of the CIHI Portal team. • Once a user knows how to create a dashboard they can be built in a few days or even hours.

• BRWG reflected on feedback received at the 2014 Full Steering Meeting in Calgary. • We needed to make tough decisions on what to stop/ keep/ start for the 2015 Annual Report. • By agreeing to “Stop” labour intensive and redundant processes, the BRWG was freed up to consider and develop true enhancements.

• For many years, CAPHC and CIHI have collaborated effectively and cultivated a tremendous partnership in regards to Decision Support. • In early 2015, CPDSN brokered an opportunity with CIHI to develop and create paediatric dashboards. • Decisions were made to build Paediatric Surgical Wait Times (PSWT), Paediatric Asthma and Paediatric ED prototypes; in accordance with criteria to guide the selection process as follows:
Impact & Influence: Relevant to clinicians and leaders from a national perspective, be pertinent to both academic and community hospitals and report enough cases to have critical mass to effect positive change.
Performance Excellence: We need to measure clinical care where improvement opportunities can be identified. If there is a positive variance observed in a region, CPDSN contacts can be approached to share expertise, protocols and guidance on how peers have achieved and sustained excellence.
Build On Past Successes: Leverage existing accomplishments, CIHI Portal reports and content related to research endorsed by CAPHC. For example, the Asthma indicator project from our recent past was very well received and it made sense to update and automate this work.
Enable Access to Care: • The Paediatric Surgical Wait Times Project (PSWT) information is now collected in CIHI and this is an excellent report mechanism for members. • Emergency Department Visits: By reviewing this information we can quickly see how patients access ED services and also see how the larger system performs related to readmissions and revisits.
Practical Considerations • The subjects should promote data exploration and make sense when viewed at national or hospital level. • Constrained to data sources in CIHI Portal and leverage existing sub reports. • Adhered to rigid timelines, some decisions were made
Paediatric ED Dashboards • Improved ED patient flow from the ED to IP units creates additional capacity in the ED and reduces time for definitive treatment for patients. • We know improving access to comprehensive ED services and providing timely care also increases satisfaction for patients and their families. • There is a variation nationally; some hospitals have “standalone” paediatric ED’s and in other centres, children are seen in “combined” adult and paediatric ED’s and reflect different experiences and outcomes.
Paediatric Asthma Dashboards • Activity reports have always included asthma rates, in 2010 CPDSN embarked on a special project to share the uptake of evidence-based care strategies to reduce readmissions and improve the quality and safety of patient care.
• Collaboration with CIHI colleagues, CAPHC and CPDSN members was phenomenal – We’ve learned a lot together. – Better understanding of how to plan timelines, gather requirements and set specifications. • This is just the beginning, please take a look the dashboards and we welcome your feedback.
