CIA & Drugs • 1967 -89 – The Life and Times of Manuel Noriega • 1967 - Noriega, already working in a US intellegency organization, is employed by the CIA. • 1968 - Noriega estableshes Panama as the US center of intelligence in Latin America. • 1971 – The US finds out that Noriega is deeply involved in drug trafficking. • 1976 – CIA Director Bush pays Noriega $110, 000 for his services. Jimmy Carter is elected and suspends all payments to Noriega.

In addition, the active leader of Panama dies in a plane crash and Noriega comes to power. He was very corrupt; he trafficked drugs, commited espionage, and even murder. • 1988 – US Urges Noriega to step down. Noriega refuses. • 1989 – Panama was invaded and Noriega was arrested and sentanced to 40 years in jail. During most of his CIA career, he was a double agent who supported communism and he dealt drugs.
