Responsible Citizenship • You cannot have a government without citizens and without citizens you cannot have a government • Citizen: One who shares and enjoys the freedoms, privileges and responsibilities of a political region such as a community, city, town or country.
Responsible Citizenship • The government grants us citizenship, but this citizenship carries certain responsibilities: • 3 basic categories: • Informed Citizenship • Purposeful Citizenship • Active Citizenship
Informed Citizenship • Aware of communities needs, as well as regional, national and global interests • Understand how government and politics works • How it operates • Major policies • Leaders • Origins • Institutions
Purposeful Citizenship • To contribute, we must know our role in our community • To be sensitive to the values and perspectives that guide our actions and decisions, as well as other people
Active Citizenship • KNOWLEDGE IS NOT ENOUGH • We must: • Apply our knowledge in a constructive manner • Know how to participate effectively within our communities and how to influence the government • Have a vision of the future and develop strategies to implement change
