Christianity Today August 2005 The Protestant reformers named three "marks by which the true church is known": the preaching of the pure doctrine of the gospel, the pure administration of the sacraments, and the exercise of church discipline to correct faults.
Today, church discipline is feared as the mark of a false church, bringing to mind images of witch trials, scarlet letters, public humiliations, and damning excommunications. Does discipline itself need correction and redemption in order to be readmitted into the body of Christ?
A Major purpose of church discipline is to protect the spiritual health of the Body
Part 4 Four-step approach to Church Discipline:
Matthew 18: 15 -20 Key passage on Church Discipline
Jesus outlines a four-step approach to Church Discipline: 1. Private confrontation 2. Small group confrontation 3. Formal leadership involvement 4. The church breaks fellowship
Step 1 1. Private confrontation “And if your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. ” Matthew 18: 15
Step 2 2. Small group confrontation “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. ” Matthew 18: 16
Step 3 3. Formal leadership involvement “And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church…” Matthew 18: 17 b
Step 4 4. The church breaks fellowship “…and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer. ” Matthew 18: 17 b
What does it mean to treat someone as a Gentile or tax-gather? Jesus was a called a friend of taxgathers and sinners “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking; and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners!” Luke 7: 34
Or was Jesus saying to treat those who are under church discipline how Gentiles and tax-gathers were typically treated during that time in Israel?
In summary. . • Turn away from them • Do not associate with them • Do not eat with them • Remove them • Keep aloof from them • Reject them
Part 5 Are sinning pastors or elders to get a more harsh form of church disciple if they refuse to repent?
Look up I Timothy 5: 17 -20 Sinning leaders can infect the lives of many in the Body of Christ more so than a nonleader.
Part 6 The Authority of The Church Matthew 18: 18 -20
This passages answers the question, “Who gives you Mr. Christian, the right to poke your nose into my business and tell me that I am in sin and that I need to change my behavior to conform to yours? ”
Part 7 The Two Common Errors in Church Discipline
The story of Mark… Mark’s story shows both extremes in a church not handling discipline correctly.
Error #1 Not addressing sin in the church I Corinthians 5: 1 -8
The sin of being with the wife of his father cost Reuben the honor of the firstborn… And it came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. – Genesis 35: 22 a
"Reuben, you are my first-born; My might and the beginning of my strength, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. "Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have preeminence, Because you went up to your father's bed; Then you defiled it-- he went up to my couch. Genesis 49: 3 -4
' Cursed is he who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's skirt. ' And all the people shall say, ' Amen. ' Deuteronomy 27: 20
I Corinthians 5: 2 When the church ignores dealing with sin in its congregation, it is guilty of:
Arrogance “And you have become arrogant, ” Question: Why is it arrogant to ignore sin in the church? Answer: Their tolerance of hideous sin indicates a prideful rejection of God’s standards.
Insensitivity to sin “and have not mourned instead” • The Greek word “mourning” (ἐπενθήσατε) was the word used for mourning of the dead.
Hebrew expressions of mourning… Ezra 9: 1 -3. When Ezra found out that the Jews were intermarrying, he: • Tore his clothes • Pulled hair and beard
Other expressions… • Dust on his head – Joshua 7: 6 • Wore sackcloth – II Kings 1: 19 • Crying – Palmist says, “My eyes shed streams of water, Because they do not keep Thy law. ” Palm 119: 136
Disobedience “in order that the one who had done this deed might be removed from your midst. ” • The story of Phinehas’ sharp spear in Numbers 25: 6 -8
Error #2 Not restoring a repentant brother II Corinthians 2: 510
The Wonder of God’s Amazing Grace and Love… • Jesus and the woman caught in adultery – John 8: 1 -11 • The Prodigal Son’s Father – Luke 15: 11 -32 • Jesus restoring Peter – John 21: 15 -19
