Chronology
Chronology • Chronology is arranging events in their order of occurrence in time. http: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Chronology
We order our history into chronological events which form a timeline • BCE: Before the Common Era (also Current Era or Christian Era) • AD: Anno Domini in medieval Latin translates to "in the Year of Our Lord”.
Note: years BCE count up as you look further into the past. Years AD count up from the beginning of the common era
• People tend to chunk periods of time into decades. • Mr. Hutton might say, he grew up in the 80’s
• Mr. Ward might say, he grew up in the late 90’s
• It is also commonplace to chunk time into centuries. You may have heard someone say something like • “Why don’t you have Snapchat? I mean, we are in the 21 st century!”
• First, a definition--a century is a hundred years. That's the easy part. The slightly tricky part is to figure out which years fall in any particular century. • For instance, the year 1997 is part of the twentieth century. So were the years 1941, 1911 and 1999. • In other words, all of the years that begin with "19" fall into the twentieth century. . . well, almost. The exceptions are 1900, which is part of the 19 th century, and 2000 which is part of the 20 th century.
Wait, what century? • The sixth century BCE • includes all of the years from 600 -501 BCE. • The sixth century CE • includes all of the years from 501 -600 CE. • The year 1895 BCE falls in the nineteenth century BCE. • The year 45 CE falls in what century? • first century CE
