I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Jesus in John 10: 14 -16 (ESV)

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. “…there are some who have heretofore not yet heard the gospel, and who would be willing to learn if someone would tell it to them, or who are so weak that they cannot readily grasp it. How I Became a Lutheran I was always interested in the Bible, but I found it confusing that all churches interpreted the Bible differently. In September of 2014, I saw an advertisement for a Lutheran version of the ALPHA Class (an introduction to the Christian faith) at Grace Lutheran Church, LCMS. I was warmly welcomed, made many friends, completed the class, and continued on with a study of Luther’s Small Catechism.

How I Became a Lutheran The true meaning of God’s Word became clear to me, including the distinction between Law and Gospel and the centrality of God’s grace through Jesus Christ. Through these classes, and the opportunity to ask questions and find biblical answers, the Bible became God’s living Word for me. In November of 2016, I joined the church and I continue to understand the Bible better each day. Linda M. – Grace Lutheran, Columbus, IN

God puts opportunities in front of us and we can take them or ignore

God puts opportunities in front of us and we can take them or ignore them. My wife and I took the opportunity to enroll in a Lutheran version of the ALPHA course as well as a course in Luther’s Small Catechism. We learned about the centrality of Christ in Scripture and about the importance of Baptism in our lives. I was raised in a Baptist church and was immersed at the age of 13 after I and others my age were told, “This is your time. ” However, I was never taught what Baptism meant, and looking back over the years I viewed it as little more than an historical event. A Lutheran understanding of theology and of Scripture changed all that, and it changed my life as well. Today, my Baptism is much more than a memory. I know it is God’s saving grace in Jesus Christ that travels with me daily. I no longer say, “I was baptized. ” Now I say, “I am baptized. ” Morris S. – Grace Lutheran, Columbus, IN How I Became a Lutheran

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1 Peter 1: 10 -12 (ESV)

Luther says it this way commenting on 1 Peter 1: 9: We have no other reason for living on earth than to be of help to others. If this were not the case, it would be best for God to kill us and let us die as soon as we are baptized and have begun to believe. But He permits us to live here in order that we may bring others to faith, just as He brought us. Quote from Luther’s Works, volume 30 © 1967, 1995 Concordia Publishing House, www. cph. org.
