Shi Huangdi: Character �Forceful – described by a poet: “Cracking his long whip, he drove the universe before him…His might shook the four seas. ” �Forward-thinking: planned/created an army of terracotta soldiers to help him rule in the afterlife �Determined: Wanted to establish a 10, 000 generation rule

Shi Huangdi: Failures �Not supported by scholars in his efforts to control the thinking of the Chinese people because he outlawed the ideas of Confucius and destroyed books that were not about medicine, technology, and farming �Was unable to put a stable government in place. After he died, rebellions ended up bringing down the Qin dynasty after only 15 years.
Liu Bang: Character �Born a peasant �Talented as a leader – beat out rivals to become emperor of China after the overthrow of the Qin Dynasty �Less harsh as a ruler than Shi Huangdi
Liu Bang: Accomplishments �Established the Han Dynasty which was a stable government and lasted 400 years �Han Dynasty rulers created a system of civil service that was based on the ideas of Confucianism to help put educated people to work for the government �Ended the harsh law of the Qin Dynasty and established laws that were supported by his people �Reduced taxes on peasants �Allowed the army to return to farming
Wudi: Character �Came to power at age 14 �War-centered – his name means “warrior Emperor” and he worked to strengthen the army and defenses �Harsh punishments
Wudi: Accomplishments �Remained in power for 50 years �Improved the Great Wall �Strengthened the army �Designed a network of storage facilities to store extra grain that would be used to prevent starvation in times of flooding or drought �Expanded Chinese rule: � west into Central Asia �north into present day Korea �south into present day Vietnam
