Ug After engaging the student with pictures and inquiry questions, we watched a clip of Razia’s Ray of Hope: What Tomorrow Brings. The video clip shows Afghan girls who have to either study outdoors or in tents since they do not have a school building. This clip sparkled the student’s interest in social justice.

PRINT: RAZIA’S RAY of HOPE This book is based on a true story. It is recommended for fourth grade. The illustrator used mixed-media to accompany the story. Previous to reading the text, the student made predictions. I presented a Power. Point to help student with vocabulary and background information about Afghanistan. I used shared reading to model for student while I pointed at each word. Afterwards, the student read the story aloud.
IDENTITY Student reflected on his education opportunity and recalled an unjust situation he has experienced.
SKILLS Student developed vocabulary, listening, comprehension, and critical thinking.
INTELLECT Student analyzed and discussed girls’ school experiences in Afghanistan.
CRITICALITY Student reflected on girls and literacy and inequalities between boys and girls in Afghanistan.
