Children’s Liturgy March 7, 2021 3 rd Sunday of Lent

Promise of New Life Focus: To respect God’s temple.

CONTEXT God’s Law is a blessed “owner’s manual. ” Without it, we wouldn’t know how to live with God and one another as God wishes. Today’s reading reminds us that Jesus had a great passion and love for the house of God. Nothing should distract us from the desire to be in God’s presence and pray. That is a valuable lesson for all of us.

FOCUS The Ten Commandments show us the proper response to the love we have received (CCC, 2083). God shows the power of his love in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (CCC, 272). His Resurrection is the beginning of God’s bringing forth a whole new creation, in which death is conquered and all that is not of God disappears.

Did You Know. . . that the Temple that Jesus visited was the Second Temple? The First Temple was constructed under King Solomon. The Second Temple was reconstructed under King Herod, but it was destroyed in AD 70. All that remains today is a portion of the Western Wall, a sacred site also known as the Wailing Wall.

Prayer Lord our God, during this holy season of Lent, renew in each of us the grace of our Baptism. May we realize that we are your sons and daughters and that, just as Christ lived a life of obedience to your will, we too are called to a life of holiness, love, and service. Through prayer, fasting, and works of mercy transform our lives and renew our hearts. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gospel John 2: 13 -22 Not long before the Jewish festival of Passover, Jesus went to Jerusalem. There he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves in the temple. He also saw moneychangers sitting at their tables. So he took some rope and made a whip. Then he chased everyone out of the temple, together with their sheep and cattle. He turned over the tables of the moneychangers and scattered their coins. Jesus said to the people who had been selling doves, “Get those doves out of here! Family Conversation Questions 1. The Gospel reminds us that church is a sacred place where we can be close to God in a special way. Discuss how our actions and movements in church demonstrate that we know it is a holy place. 1. What in my life is cluttered and needs to be “cleaned out”? Talk with your child about what might be distracting us from focusing on God - especially at Lent.

Family Faith in Action Are there other prayer opportunities offered at your parish during Lent: the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, Benediction, Evening Prayer, Lenten Mission? Consider participating with your family to enrich Lent with more prayer. Fasting and almsgiving complement one another during the Lenten season. Choose an evening this week when your family can eat a simple Lenten meal. How much money did you save by preparing this simpler fare? Contribute it to the charity of your choice.
