CONTEXT On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we recall the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. As Jesus steps into the Jordan River, a new age begins. All three persons of the Holy Trinity arrive on the scene. As Jesus is baptized, the Spirit descends, and the Father proclaims that Jesus is “my own dear Son. ”

Prayer Lord our God, in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, you have become one of us. During this Christmas season, help us to enter more deeply into the mystery of the Incarnation. Help us to recognize your presence in the Holy Child in the manger, in the sacraments of the Church, and in the people around us: in family, friends, and strangers, knowing that Christ was born for all and that we are all children of God. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faith in Action With your child, share family pictures of liturgical events and sacraments. Talk about your child’s Baptism and, if possible, the Baptisms of other family members. Explain that everyone who is baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit are members of God’s family. Come up with a way to welcome those in your parish who are newly baptized and their families. Perhaps your child can help make a card welcoming the newly baptized into God’s family.
