Jesus Heals Many Focus: To preach the Gospel by healing and teaching.
CONTEXT Jesus comes to serve a world that is suffering and in pain. Jesus’ healing touch lifts up Peter’s mother-in-law. She responds by serving. Jesus heals so many people, spiritually and physically, that he needs to escape into seclusion to pray. Jesus knows spiritual healing is the deepest need. He moves on to drive the demons from people’s lives with his preaching.
FOCUS Ideas and ethics do not make one a Christian. It is only through encounter with the person of Jesus that one undergoes a transformation of life. Belief in Jesus cannot be separated from living the Christian life: living in community, serving others, and forgiveness. While we hope that God’s justice will eventually fill the earth, we must dedicate our work to spread the Christian message of love and justice to people living today.
Did You Know. . . that the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be received each time we suffer a serious illness, or periodically for those with chronic illness or those who are suffering from old age. God’s abundant gifts of healing power and mercy are received in these sacraments.
Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer Lord our God, you sent your Son into the world to live with us as one of us, to heal, to teach, to sanctify, and to proclaim the Good News of the coming of the Kingdom. Help us to live our Baptism to the fullest and to find ways to do what Jesus did: to bring joy and life wherever we go, to lift up the suffering and to tell other people about the new life Jesus has brought us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, Alleluia. Christ bore our sickness, and endured our suffering. Alleluia, Alleluia.
Gospel Mark 1: 29 -39 As soon as Jesus left the meeting place with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon’s mother -in-law was sick in bed with fever. Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal. Family Conversation Questions 1. Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. Peter’s mother-in-law began to serve once she was healed. Are our lives a service to God and to our brothers and sisters? 1. Jesus is also aware of his mission through prayer, and he takes time to pray. How often have we prayed for healing body and soul and for guidance?
Family Faith in Action At every single stage of life, each of us makes important decisions that have an impact on us and those around us. Teach your child that we all need quiet reflection and prayer before these important decisions are made. We can call on the Holy Spirit, or God the Father, or Jesus Christ to help guide us. You might share some crossroads or key decisions you have made and how prayer helped guide you in making a decision.
