Children’s Literature & Their Development Darby Cahill
Importance of Literature in Development ❏ Literature helps children develop in several ways including: ❏ Expanding their language and communication skills ❏ Stimulates their imagination and creativity ❏ Encourages critical thinking
Duck! Rabbit! ❖ The first book I’ve chosen is “Duck! Rabbit!” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld (Books that stretch) ❖ This piece of literature challenges the child to look at things from a different perspective, as the visuals present something that can be seen differently from different angles ❖ This can encourage them to be more creative and inquisitive
Just How Long Can a Long String Be? ! ❏ The second book I’ve chosen is “Just How Long Can a Long String Be? !” by Keith Baker (Books that stretch) ❏ In this book, the characters talk about all the uses of a piece of string ❏ This requires the child to use their imagination to find purposes for the string and helps them to engage in problem solving
Selma ❏ The third book I’ve chosen is “Selma” by Jutta Bauer (The Value) ❏ This story encourages emotional intelligence by challenging the children to think about what happiness is
Conclusion ❏ Each of these pieces of literature challenge children in early childhood differently, but importantly ❏ They all stimulate cognitive, social, and emotional development
