CHILD TRAINING OBSTACLES EPH 6 4 Child Training
CHILD TRAINING OBSTACLES EPH 6: 4
Child Training Obstacles • • • Psalm 127 V. 1 -2 the will of the Lord prevails V. 3 -5 children are a blessing from God Children a burden is unbiblical Selfish attitude Insanity is hereditary; I inherited it from my kids
Child Training Obstacles Being defensive of our parenting • “Don’t tell me how to raise my kid!” • 2 Tim 4: 1 -5 – preach the word in season & out • Titus 2: 4 Christian mothers are to teach younger mothers • Prov. 13: 1 Christians receive instruction humbly • Acts 2: 41; 28: 23 -28 • 2 Cor. 10: 3 -5 spiritual weapon of God’s word is to break down defensive attitude in opposition to God
Misunderstanding of goals/methods • If you don’t know what the job of a parent is, you won’t be a good one • Eph 6: 4 – there is a proper way to train children: what God has said • Titus 2: 4 – “love your children” not the instinctive love for a child (STORGE), but showing love in the way one is raised by raising them correctly • Heb 12 – sorrowful experiences/sufferings will teach children character and provide them with greater long‐term happiness Rm 5: 3 -4 • Not “do” you love your children, but “how” you love your children
Misunderstanding of human nature • Do not think that children do not learn while they are in their first few years of life • Learning Romanian • Learning religion: “I don’t want to impose” • By not teaching them, we are teaching them • What are we teaching them at every point in the child’s life? • Remember our imperfections • Be diligent to model morality, kindness at home • Apologize when you do wrong
Trust in worldly philosophies • People trust in the way their parents raised children, their friends, book, etc. – not the bible • The world can put “unreasonable” expectations on the way children are supposed to be raised • Col 2: 8 – do not trust in worldly philosophies, but in Jesus • Col. 2: 9 -10, 3 – by trusting in Dr. Spock, etc. we’re saying Jesus is not complete • use wisdom to apply biblical principles • 2 Pt 1: 3 all things pertaining to life & godliness
Parental baggage • Baggage – how we were brought up, spouse brought up, etc. • Reject parents’ strictness • Reject parents’ over‐permissiveness • One ought to look at it objectively • All parents did some right and wrong • 2 Peter 1: 8 -9 – there can be a short‐sightedness or far‐sighted • Heb 5: 11 – because of their baggage, it made it hard for them to understand
We All Have Baggage • Matt. 11: 28 -30 • Jesus calls us to let go of it and take up His light burden • Provides easy yoke to help • Jesus provides rest • Trust God! • Don’t trust men’s doctrines • Humbly submit to God’s way Acts 2: 38
