ABOUT THE AUTHOR Catherine pigott is a producer for CBC’s “ This morning ”, became aware of women issues when she taught English in Gambia in the early 1980’s. serves on the advisory committee to the Afghan Women’s organization. Produced a Canadian project called “ Muslim women in the media “ in 1998.

ABOUT GAMBIA Gambia is a small country located in West Africa, with Banjul being its capital. Bounded by Senegal and the coastline of the Atlantic ocean, with a population of less than 3 million people. Speaks English as its official language, and uses Gambian Dalasi as its official currency.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE BEAUTY ?

ABOUT THE ESSAY This essay is a personal essay with an informal tone where the Author talks about her stay in Gambia, Africa, and what she experienced during her stay there. She drew a contrast between the Gambian ideal of beauty and that of Canada. In the essay, pigott indirectly states that every one is beautiful, but it is the opinions and preferences that differ.

THESIS Gambia has a “far more realistic” view of beauty, than “the impossible long-legged leanness” in Canada -(para. 6) (alliteration) Gambia and Canada are compared and our emphasis on thinness and obsessive dieting are ridiculed.

LITERARY DEVICES IMAGERY: “ They pressed the rice balls into their fists, squeezing until the bright red palm oil ran down their forearms and dropped off their elbows” (para. 3) HYPERBOLE: “ They had no hips” (para. 10) METAPHOR: “Women i once would have envied appeared fragile and even ugly”. (para. 10)

LITERARY DEVICES DICTION: “The language of sin is not applied to food”. (para. 9) ALLUSION: The Author uses an event to explain how transformed she felt. (para. 8) SIMILE: “ My perception of beauty altered as my body did”. (para. 10). ANECDOTES: The entire essay consist of a series of short anecdotes

AUDIENCE • Young women, people who are insecure about their appearance, mostly 17 years and older.

DEFINITIONS • PUBERTAL: Relating to puberty • BEWILDERED: Perplexed, confused. • PALM OIL: A red looking type of oil made from palm fruits. Usually located in Africa, amazon, or the Caribbean.

DISCUSSION • What do you think is the problem with the way people describe beauty around the world? . • The Author says that Africa’s image of a perfect female body was more realistic. Do you think the perspective of beauty in Canada is unrealistic or far more extreme? .

CONCLUSION • Beauty is subjective. The ideals of beauty are not the same all over the world. What we consider beautiful and attractive, may be considered ugly and unattractive in other parts of the world.
