כה - כ : כג - G-d is speaking to Bnei Yisrael through Moshe G-d will send a malach in front of you to the place He has made ready, Eretz Yisrael. Be careful of this malach because if you rebel, he will punish you harshly. He can’t forgive your sins. If you obey the malach and therefore do what G-d says, He will help you.
Only after … אשר העלית מארץ מצרים • The people’s behaviour is more Egyptian than Jewish. G-d is hoping for an extreme makeover. • It is hard to strike the right balance between having an intermediary in order to relate to Gd, and making the intermediary into god which is quintessential idol worship.
כה - יז : לב - Next Chronologically Yehoshua hears the voices of the people. To him, a general, it sounds like a war. Moshe says it is just noise, rather than the calls of defeat. It is the noise of being wild. G-d has tried to take Egypt out of the Jews for the past two months. Moshe, seeing the dancing, gets angry and breaks the luchot. Similar to laws of Sotah. This is a test of whether the people are breaking the covenant or being loyal.
מצרים to G-d, they - הדרך אשר צויתם עשו להם עגל מסכה וישתחוו - ח סרו מהר מן prayed to the egel. . לו ויאמרו אלהיך ישראל אשר העלוך מארץ מצרים - לו ויזבחו ערף - קשה - העם הזה והנה עם - משה ראיתי את - ט ויאמר יהוה אל • G-d reaches the conclusion that the people are stiff-necked and can’t change. הוא • • • direction. G-d can't bring us to Eretz Yisrael until we learn to be His people. The goal is to represent Gd. G-d is waiting to see how they react without Moshe. This proves to G-d that they're not ready to be his people. Maybe people like Moshe are ready – Shevet Levi. In reality, not everyone can be perfect and so G-d needs to renegotiate the contract for normal human beings. Brit Sinai has to go through a change in which the contract becomes more forgiving. G-d's nation is not perfect, but is striving to be perfect. When they make mistakes, they realise they are human and try to make it right.
לא - ל : לב - Felony or Misdemeanour First time we have the concept of kapara. Did the people commit a felony, idol worship, or just a misdemeanour, not serving G -d in the optimum way? Serving other gods is warned against in the Ten Commandments.
כב - יט : כ - Serving G-d the Wrong Way Don't make out of Me or for Me a molten image. You may mean well but it is dangerous. Serve G-d through a simple mizbeach of adama. Moshe is saying that they didn’t break the Ten Commandments, they broke the Ko Tomar unit.
לה - לב : לב - Cancel Brit Sinai Moshe can’t forgive them but G-d can. Moshe isn’t willing to work for G-d anymore unless G-d becomes more forgiving. כתבת Go lead the people… לי אמחנו מספרי - אשר חטא …to the Land of Israel. It is no longer the place אשר הניחותי. G-d says they can have the land (Brit Avot) without Brit Sinai. They will no longer be representing G-d. הנה מלאכי ילך לפניך Who is this malach? The first credit card – they will be. חטאתם punished but not immediately.
יג - יב : פרק לג - Moshe’s Response Moshe tells G-d to understand something. G-d told Moshe to bring the people to Israel without knowing who the malach is. Moshe wants to understand how this relationship will work. He wants G-d to understand that they are His nation. There’s no point to Brit Avot without Brit Sinai.
Catch 22 If G-d comes with us then as soon as we do something wrong we get punished and won’t survive. If G-d doesn’t come with us then there is no point to our survival. • Therefore, we need a new relationship. • G-d will be in our midst but we can get along even though we're not perfect. • Requires a change of attributes, a new brit. • We need Middot Ha. Rachamim, the ability of rachamim, and not just din.
Rashi’s Opinion • We cannot ignore the connection between chet ha’egel and the Mishkan. • Had we not sinned, we could have had a replica of Har Sinai but it wouldn’t necessarily have to be portable. • As a result of chet ha’egel we are not going to Israel so soon. • We need something in the desert for rehab and so need an immediate portable structure.
Why the Order? • If the Mishkan came after chet ha’egel, we would think we only need the Mishkan because of chet ha’egel. • Therefore, Chumash puts the Mishkan first to show that even without the chet, we still need a structure to remember Har Sinai. • The order highlights the connection between the Mishkan and Har Sinai which otherwise might not be noticed.
