Chemistry Lab Safety Brainstorm What is Mrs Blands
Chemistry Lab Safety
Brainstorm • What is Mrs. Bland’s #1 lab safety rule? • FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS – WRITTEN AND VERBAL! (#2)
Goggles (#23) • When do you wear goggles? When working with fire or heat – Biological fluids (blood) – Glassware – Chemicals • Where are goggles worn? – Over the eyes!!!
What’s wrong with this picture?
Food and Drink (#5) • Food, drinks and chewing gum are not allowed in the lab at all!!! • Some chemicals release a volatile gas that could come in contact with chewing gum in your mouth • Don’t put anything in your mouth during the lab (even your pencil)
What were they thinking? e v a h y e h t r t i s e y a fet h t e l At ir sa over the gles g o g s! e ey
Unauthorized experiments (#6) • Do NOT perform unauthorized experiments – Just do what you were told to do
Horseplay (#8) • No horseplay, practical jokes, shoving, squirting of pipettes • Why? – Injuries – You break something when you’re playing around, you have to pay for it (fine sheet)
Housekeeping (#9) • Leave backpacks, purses and other books at your desk • Pick up and wash all your equipment • Avoid cross-contamination If it’s clean when you get there, it needs to be clean when you leave…no exceptions!
Where’s the Safety Equipment? (#11) • Can you find it? – Exits – Fire extinguisher – Fire blanket – Eye wash – Safety shower
Caught on fire? • If your lab partner catches on fire, here’s your options: – Tell your friend to stop, drop and roll – Get the fire blanket – Push them under the safety shower
Fume Hoods (#12) • Work in a well-ventilated area (fume hood or outside) when working with volatile liquids or substances that emit a toxic odor
Chemical Waste (#14) • Dispose of chemical waste as instructed by Mrs. Welch • There a lot of chemicals that cannot go down the sink
Wash your hands (#16) • Wash your hands after performing all experiments • Might want to wash your hands before using restroom
Stay at your station (#17) • • Equipment needs to be monitored Experiments need to be completed Materials need to be cleaned Wandering away distracts you and others, makes it difficult to get around in an emergency and leads to horseplay
Dress Properly (#25) • Pull back long hair • Take off dangling jewelry • Pull back loose clothing • Wear an apron when appropriate • Closed toed shoes
Accidents (#27 and #29) • Report any accident immediately • If chemical gets in your eye, flush with water for 20 minutes
Using Chemicals (#31, 32, 33) • Waft – Prevents chemicals from entering respiratory tract • Take only as much as you need • Do not return to original container – Do not want to cross contaminate chemicals
Acids (#36) • We will be using some strong acids in class (nitric acid, sulfuric acid) • If you need to dilute, add small amount of acid into water…swirl to absorb reaction
Glassware (#41 and #45) • Broken glass does not go in trash can. There is a designated container for broken glass. • Do NOT use chipped or cracked glassware. Let Mrs. Welch know if there is broken glassware.
Glassware (#48) • Do NOT immerse hot glassware into cold water; it may shatter
Heating • #49 – Do NOT put any substances into a flame unless instructed. Be careful about reaching over an open flame. • #51 – Do NOT point an open test tube at any person.
Bunsen Burners (#50) • Do not leave flames unattended • Make sure the hose is not hanging off the edge of the lab desk • Do not turn on gas until ready to use
Which beaker is hot? (#52) • Hot glass looks like cold glass • If you’ve been heating something, don’t touch it!
Lab Accident: General Chemical Spills What To Do: Notify Teacher may have you clean it up. If acid, use baking soda to neutralize. If base, use vinegar to neutralize. All clean-up paper towels go in the FIRE CAN.
Lab Accident: Chemical Spills on the skin What To Do: Flush with large quantities of water. Run water over the area for at least 20 seconds. If the body part will not fit in a sink (chest, both legs) the emergency shower will be used.
Lab Accident: What To Do: Something in the Eyes Flush eyes at the eye wash immediately with plenty of water for between 5 and 20 minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, do not allow the eye to be rubbed. Go to nurse.
