Chemistry Investigation 3 and 4 Vocabulary Mixture A
Chemistry Investigation 3 and 4 Vocabulary
Mixture A combination of two or more substances.
Dissolve Term used to describe the process by which particles of one substance disperse and spread evenly in the substance.
Soluble The ability of a solid or gas to dissolve in a liquid.
Solute The substance or substances that change phase when creating a solution or that are present in the smaller amounts in a solution.
Solvent The substance in a solution that did not change when creating the solution or is present in the larger amount.
Solution A mixture of two or more substances that are uniform(mixed evenly) in composition and appearance.
Solutions are groups of molecules that are mixed and evenly distributed. Scientists say that solutions are homogenous systems. Everything in a solution is evenly spread out and thoroughly mixed.
Solution
Solution Let's compare sugar in water (H 2 O) to sand in water. Sugar dissolves and is spread throughout the glass of water. The sand sinks to the bottom. The sugar-water is a homogenous mixture while the sandwater is a heterogeneous mixture. Both are mixtures, but only the sugar-water can also be called a solution.
Miscible Liquids that can mix without separating.
Chemical Change A change in which a new substance or substances are produced.
Physical Change A change in which no new substance is produced but the original substance changes form.
