CHEMISTRY FOR HHD MAJORS STEPHANIE BENJAMIN, HEALTH SCIENCES, HHD
§ In the College of Health and Human Development, the following majors require students to take a lower division chemistry (CHEM) course*: § Environmental and Occupational Health (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103) § Kinesiology - Exercise Science (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103) § Health Science - Public Health (CHEM 100 or CHEM 103) Guiding Question § In the Fall of 2018, the overall DFW rates for these chemistry courses were**: § 33% for CHEM 100 § 20% for CHEM 101 § 21% for CHEM 103 § For each major, is there a difference in DFW and repeat rates between the recommended CHEM courses? *For students to take CHEM 101, they must either have a satisfactory score on the Placement Test or a grade of “C” or higher in CHEM 100. **Taken from CSUN’s Student Success Dashboard Chemistry
CSUN Pathways data were analyzed § Data from Fall 2012 -Fall 2018 were combined (summer classes were excluded) Overview of Data § Only HHD students who were enrolled in each of the three majors at the time they took the chemistry course(s) were included in the analyses. § Introductory chemistry courses recommended for each of the three majors were evaluated based on: § DFW rates § Repeat rates
DFW Rates: Program CHEM 100 CHEM 101 CHEM 103 Environmental and Occupational Health 41% 31% 18% Exercise Science 27% 24% 13% Public Health 49% Findings 19% Percent of students from each major who had to repeat CHEM 100, CHEM 101 and CHEM 103 0, 16 0, 14 0, 12 0, 1 0, 08 0, 06 0, 04 0, 02 0 CHEM 101 Major EOH ES PH CHEM 103
§ Recommendations Concluding Thoughts § For all three programs, the DFW rates were lowest for CHEM 103. Therefore, unless students need CHEM 100/101 for graduate school, these programs may want to consider recommending students take CHEM 103 to improve student success. § Implications § Recommending more students take CHEM 103 instead of CHEM 100 or 101 could impact the Chemistry Department § In Spring 19, there are 11 CHEM 100 sections and there is only 1 CHEM 103 section
