Chemical Reactions Lab
Penny Reaction • Materials – 100 ml beaker – 4 pennies – White vinegar – Salt – Paper towels – Bolts – Glass rod
Directions Put in 50 ml of vinegar in the beaker Add ½ spoon of salt and stir with the glass rod Stir with the glass rod until all the salt dissolves Add 2 pennies to the mixture and leave for 1 minute Take out the pennies, rinse them, and put them on the paper towels • Add 2 more pennies to the mixture and leave for 1 minute • Take out the pennies, do not rinse them, and put them on the paper towels • • •
Directions (continued) • Place two bolts in the mixture and leave them for 1 minute • Take out the two bolts and place them on the paper towel.
Questions • Describe what happened to the first two pennies you placed in the mixture? • Describe what happened to the second two pennies you placed in the mixture? • Describe what happened to the bolts you placed in the mixture? • What tells you that a chemical change occurred?
Clean Up • Leave the pennies and bolts on the paper towel. • Pour the salt and vinegar mixture down the sink and rinse it down with water. • Rinse out the beaker completely. • Return the salt to the front table.
Lights Out • Material – 100 ml beaker – Baking soda – Vinegar – A lit candle in clay
Directions • The teacher will come around and light your candle. • Add 10 ml of vinegar to the 100 ml beaker. • Put 1 spoon of baking soda in the 100 ml beaker. • After the baking soda and vinegar stop reacting, pour the contents of the beaker on the candle but do not the liquid.
Questions • Describe what happened when you poured the beaker onto the candle? Why? • What tells you that this was a chemical reaction?
Clean Up • Pour the baking soda and vinegar mixture into the sink and rinse it down with water. • Rinse the beaker out thoroughly. • Return the baking soda, vinegar, candle, and beaker to the front desk.
Blobs in a Bottle • Materials – 100 ml beaker – Vegetable oil – Alka-Seltzer tablet – Food coloring – Glass rod – Brush
Directions • • • Add 30 ml of water to the beaker Add 50 ml of vegetable oil to the beaker. Let the beaker rest for 1 minute Add two drops of food coloring to the beaker Drop in ¼ of the Alka-Seltzer tablet Wait for 30 seconds and drop in another tablet and repeat
Questions • Why do the water and vegetable oil separate? • Describe what happened when you dropped in the food coloring? Why? • Does the Alka-Seltzer tablet react with the oil or water? How do you know? • What tells you that a chemical change occurred?
Clean Up • Pour the water and oil mixture down the sink and rinse it down with water. • Use the brush and cleaning powder to clean the beaker. • Return the food coloring, bolts, pennies, and vegetable oil to the front table. • Wipe your area well. • Return your goggles to the back counter.
