The Initial Dilemma

The Purpose • Provide participants the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research with our world-renowned faculty. • Allow for networking opportunities • About 21 students • Also showcase their institution • Present a oral/poster presentation

The Goals • Make participants feel comfortable in a lab setting and increase their research skills; • teach participants to think critically about theory and application of biomedical research; • increase the participants’ proficiency in communicating scientific concepts; • increase the number of underrepresented and first-generation to college students who consider careers in biomedical research.

The Lab • Assigned to my second mentor choice • Assigned to an ongoing/current project • Worked with an MD/Ph. D student, grad student and a lab tech

A Typical Day? • Work: Who knows. It varies. • Lunch? • T/Th – various talks set up for the program: 12 – 1 pm • Lunch provided • Two sponsored ”field” trips • A day of surfing with the Dean

• La Jolla, CA • 15 -20 minutes north of downtown San Diego • 30 minutes from the Mexico border • Walking distance from Salk Institute, University of California, San Diego, and The Craig Venter Institute
