MAP PROJECTION Definition: representing the spherical earth on a plane (flat) surface It is impossible to transform a sphere into something flat without creating distortions in the 2 -D image. Geographers use numerous mathematical equations to produce map projections.
MERCATOR PROJECTION Most common map projection since 1569 Distorts the size & shape of the continents (especially Greenland & Antarctica) Meridians do not converge
CONIC PROJECTION Not geometrically accurate. Better for regional or hemispheric maps
INTERRUPTED PROJECTION Show’s true size and shape Distances are inaccurate and map is broken in many places
ROBINSON’S PROJECTION Scales vary throughout the map More distortion at the poles World map used by National Geographic since 1988
AZIMUTHAL PROJECTION Size & distances distorted the further away you get from the starting point Distances between two places are accurate on a straight line through the starting point only Used for aviation
