Academic Achievement Record (AAR) • TAC, Ch. 74, specifies that graduates of each high school are awarded the same type of diploma. • The academic achievement record, rather than the diploma, records individual accomplishments, achievements, and courses completed and displays appropriate graduation seals. • The Minimum Standards for the AAR identifies requirements for the AAR. § 74. 24 Credit by Examination Credit by examination provides students with the opportunity to accelerate a grade level or to earn credit for a secondary course. In Grades 1 -5, a student must be accelerated one grade if • the student scores 90% on a criterion-referenced test for the grade level he or she wants to skip in each of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies; • a school district representative recommends that the student be accelerated; and • the student's parent or guardian gives written approval for the acceleration. 19 TAC Chapter 89 Special Education Graduation Requirements • Courses with modified content apply to the Minimum High School Program (MHSP) only and cannot be counted toward the Recommended High School Program (RHSP) or the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP). • Only students receiving modified instruction and/or content are eligible to participate in the modified or alternate assessment instruments. • Students receiving special education services are no longer permitted to be exempted from the state assessment program and must take the assessment instrument that the ARD committee has determined is appropriate. Prerequisites A student may not be enrolled in a course that has a required prerequisite unless the student • has completed the prerequisite course(s); • has demonstrated equivalent knowledge as determined by the school district; or • was already enrolled in the course in an out-of-state, an out-of-country, or a Texas nonpublic school and transferred to a Texas public school prior to successfully completing the course. Prerequisites A district may award credit for a course a student completed without having met the prerequisites if the student completed the course in an out-of-state, an out-ofcountry, or a Texas nonpublic school where there was not a prerequisite. Combining Credits The TAC allows a local school district to award credit proportionately to students to who are able to successfully complete only one semester of a two-semester course. Unless the TAC specifically prohibits combining two half credits to satisfy a graduation requirement, in accordance with local district policy, a student may satisfy a graduation requirement for which there are multiple options with one-half credit of one allowable option and one-half credit of a second allowable option. Award of Credit (d) In accordance with local district policy, students who are able to successfully complete only one semester of a twosemester course can be awarded credit proportionately. Combining Credits • MHSP - A student may not combine one-half credit of Algebra II with one-half credit from another mathematics course to satisfy the final mathematics credit requirement. • MHSP - A student may not combine one-half credit of either World History Studies or World Geography Studies with onehalf credit from another academic elective course to satisfy the academic elective credit requirement. • All Programs - A student may not combine one-half credit of a course for which there is an end-of-course assessment with another elective to satisfy an elective credit requirement. Dual Credit/Enrollment A student may earn high school credit for successfully completing a college course that provides advanced academic instruction beyond, or in greater depth than, the TEKS for a corresponding high school course. AP/IB Incentives Test Fees A $30 test fee subsidy is provided for each AP and IB exam taken by eligible Texas public school students. Eligible students are those who • have taken an authorized AP/IB course or have been recommended by their principals to take the exam, and • demonstrate financial need. Teacher Training Reimbursement 2013 In support of the AP and IB programs, the teacher training reimbursement (TTR) program allows the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to reimburse districts for the cost of TEAapproved AP/IB or pre-AP/IB training up to $450 for each qualified teacher.
