Harriet Beecher Stowe (abolitionist) • Wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin which told of the mistreatment of the slaves. Angered many southerners who said it gave a false picture of slavery. "There, you impudent dog! Now will you learn not to answer back when I speak to you? Take the horse back, and clean him properly. I'll teach your place!" - Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Ch. 23

Harriet Tubman (abolitionist) • Conductor of the Underground Railroad. Helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom. • “I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves. ”

Frederick Douglass (abolitionist) • Abolitionist who published the North Star to spread the idea of anti-slavery. Advised Lincoln during Civil War. • “I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress. ” • “I didn't know I was a slave until I found out I couldn't do the things I wanted. ”

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (women’s rights) • Leader in women’s rights who called for the end to all laws discriminating against women. • (Seneca Falls Convention) • “I would have girls regard themselves not as adjectives but as nouns. ” • We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal. ”

Susan B. Anthony (women’s rights) • Leader in women’s rights who fought for equal pay and coeducation. • “I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet. ”

Horace Mann (education reform) • Established free elementary education • Free Public Education in America • By the 1850 s, most northern states set up free taxsupported elementary schools. • “A human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated. ”

Lyman Beecher (banning of alcohol) • Leader in the temperance movement. Blamed alcohol for poverty, crime, insanity, and the breakup of families. • “Never chase a lie. Let it alone, and it will run itself to death. ”

Sojourner Truth • Women’s suffrage • Fought for Women’s rights for women of ALL races. • “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! Dorothea Dix (mentally ill) • Worked to improve the treatment of the mentally ill and prison reform. Mentally ill were kept in cages, chained naked to walls, and beaten. • “Man is not made better by being degraded; he is seldom restrained from crime by harsh measures, except the principle of fear predominates in his character; and then he is never made radically better for its influence. ” • “In a world where there is so much to be done.
