Germanic Kingdoms Replaced Roman provinces with Germanic Kingdoms. Government shifted from loyalty to citizenship and government to personal loyalty and family. Unification among written laws shifted to traditional unwritten laws. Changes in Europe after Roman Empire fell: Trade was disrupted cities abandoned population shifted to country side. Learning declined. Loss of a common language. Christianity survived!

Fought against another Germanic army but prayed to the Christian God in fear of a defeat. Roman Catholic Church welcomed Clovis’s conversion to Christianity and supported his military campaigns. Clovis would unite the Franks into one kingdom under the partnership with the Christian Church.

The Pope was very thankful so he crowned him the as the “Holy Roman Emperor. ” This coronation was historical because the Pope claimed political right to grant the title of royalty. This event signaled the joining of Germanic Power, the Church, and the heritage of the Roman Empire.

The Carolingian Legacy Empire was larger than the Byzantine Empire. Charlemagne died in 814 BCE. He crowned his only surviving son Louis the Pious. Louis was an ineffective ruler and left three sons after he died. All three fought for control of the Empire. In 843 BCE, the brother would sign the Treaty of Verdun. Divided the empire into three kingdoms. As a result, central authority broke down and the kings lost power. The lack of strong rulers would lead to a new system of government.
