Characterization is the process by which the author reveals the personality of the character.

Characterization is the process by which the author reveals the personality of the character. Two types of characterization: Direct Characterization Indirect Characterization

Direct Characterization Direct characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.

Direct Characterization Direct characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. This involves the narrator. “The patient boy and quiet girl were well mannered and never disobeyed their mother. ” The narrator directly tells the personality of both children: The boy is “patient” The girl is “quiet”

Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of the character. There are five

Indirect Characterization Speech. What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts.

Indirect Characterization Speech. What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts. What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts or feelings? Effect on others toward the character. What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters think and behave in reaction to the character? Actions. What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks. What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
