Character Pitch CALLUM ROURKE
Bernie Bassett: Bio Bernie Bassett is a humanoid who is made out of Liquorice Allsorts sweets. He was created in Candyland in a vat that made Liquorice Allsorts. He has deemed himself a hero of his village, Liquoriceville. He carries a candy cane as a weapon of choice and he stops the incoming and constant invasion of the jelly sweets. Bernie is very flexible and is agile, and he can also throw liquorice projectiles.
Bernie Bassett: Moves Here is a rundown at Bernie Bassett’s moves: Bernie’s Low attack will involve Bernie throwing a Liquorice projectile underarm like a bowling ball and it will slide along the floor and send the opponent on the floor. His High attack involves Bernie Bassett taking off his top hat and throwing it at the enemy and it will hit the enemy with a cartoony sound effect. Next, his Special attack can be obtained when the player gathers enough points and it will involve Bernie taking out his Candy cane stick and hitting it rapidly at the opponent with a cartoony sound effect. His Walking stance will be stroll with his twirling his candy cane stick often. Finally, the Taunt will be Bassett waving his cane in a circle above his head and a blur animation will be shown, along with a grin on his face.
Ninjabread Man: Bio Coming from the same world as Bernie Bassett, Candyland, Ninjabread Man lives in Cookieville and his a highly skilled, highly trained ninja made of a gingerbread man biscuit/cookie. Despite his size of 2 foot, he is agile, flexible, nimble and very quick. He has sworn to protect his village from the gumdrop warriors that invade Cookieville. His weapon of choice are two biscuit katanas and his actual origins of how he came to be are unknown.
Ninjabread Man: Moves Here is a rundown of Ninjabread Man’s moves: Ninjabread Man’s Low attack will be a low direct hit with his katanas, and a sound of a sword being drawn will be made. His High attack will be Ninjabread Man jumping onto the opponent’s head and hitting them rapidly with his hands. A cartoony punching sound will be included. Now for his Special attack which will be the ninja throwing his two swords at the enemy and they will act like boomerangs twirling rapidly and by hitting the enemy and coming back to Ninjabread Man who will insert them back into their pouch. Ninjabread Man’s Walking stance will be the most unique out of the three characters, as he will flip and roll while walking. Finally, his Taunt move will be him staring at his opponent with his mouth in a sneer.
Discarded Character: “Gangsta” Rat: Bio This character is a humanoid Gangster Rat. He is ruthless and is determined to kill those who betray him or mess with him. He became a gangster to gain control of the mob to outwit and dominate his enemy. He is naturally quick in movement as well as quick witted, sly and is strong and also dresses for the occasion, as his shirt, tie and hat makes him appear more gentlemanly than he seems… He also has a long tail that can be used on his enemies.
Discarded Character: “Gangsta” Rat: Moves Here is a rundown of “Gangsta” Rat’s moves: For his Low attack, “Gangsta” Rat can swish his tail along the floor and hit the opponent’s feet and stun them. His High attack will involve hitting the opponent with a blur of fists and leave the opponent dazed and stunned. This character’s Special attack is particularly graphic, as “Gangsta” Rat’s special attack is violent and too violent as it will involve him punching the opponent and if the player gets a good score he will fire shots in a cloud of smoke for a combo. However, no blood or gore is shown, but I feel this is still too violent. Now for his Walking stance; “Gangsta” Rat will walk like any normal human as he is humanoid, however an animation will be included where his tail will swish from side to side. Finally, for the final move, Taunt. This character’s taunt will involve him doing a snarl, showing his white, pointy teeth and his tail will thump the ground as his adrenaline kicks in.
Discarded Character: “Gangsta” Rat: Reasons for discarding I have decided to discard “Gangsta” Rat because I felt that he was an extremely dark and violent character to put in the game. His backstory has violent and dark undertones and that would not resonate with a younger audience. The fact that his weapon of choice is a machine gun meant that would be totally unsuitable to a child friendly audience. However, I do think that this is a good character if it were for a game that was for all age groups, but for a child friendly game and audience, then this was always going to not make the cut. As for animating the character, this would have been a challenging and complex character model to do for me, as there is a lot of detail in this character; the suit, the hat, the gun- this would have been very time consuming and I was able to think realistically and know that this would also be a very fiddly model to build which would be too much for me. As for the materials, this model would of used a lot of clay.
My chosen character To animate my character, I have decided that Bernie Bassett will be the most appropriate and my personal favourite character overall. I believe that Bernie will be a very easy character model to animate, as he will require little clay to build and shape his character; I am using his appearance as an advantage and literally build and shape him out of Liquorice Allsorts sweets. I can also make his candy cane stick out of clay, which incidentally wouldn’t even be a challenge for me. I almost chose Ninjabread Man over Bernie Bassett, as Ninjabread Man looked more aesthetically pleasing, as his whole gimmick of being a ninja and a gingerbread man seemed to resonate with him, but I also thought that the younger audience would appeal to the character, as they love sweets and treats. However, this design of Ninjabread Man was taken directly from a video game titled “Ninjabread Man” so it was a copyrighted design that I used. However, Bernie Bassett is directly based on and inspired by a very famous British figure of confectionary, and as a result, I think all audiences, especially children will appeal to this character. I also believe his backstory I created will add a fun and unique take on the Bertie Bassett original character and his moves will be fun and easy to animate.
SWOT Analysis Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats I chose to do a character based on the Bertie Bassett character, as it is a classic British icon of confectionary. This is a huge advantage for me, as I have chosen a character that is recognisable to its British audience. It will appeal to my audience as people playing will presumably be British and recognise it as the Bertie Bassett man. Kids will appeal to it as it made of sweets, which is a childlike desire. My character is different from the other designs I did as despite being a clone of a famous icon, it still feels original, as I have made my character carry a Candy Cane for a weapon which he can hit for a cartoony sound effect. The unique selling point is that he is made of sweets and has a variety of candy weapons like a cane and a Candy Floss Cannon. With Bernie Bassett I could’ve improved the design of the character as he is a direct clone of Bertie, and I think this is what my audience will see as its weakness. I could’ve added in my own visual spin to the character to really make him original. The factors of Bernie Bassett that makes my idea unsuitable is his weapons. The idea of a cannon in a kid’s game won’t appeal to parents however I have made it so no violence is needed. The great thing about my character is that he is made entirely of Liquorice Allsorts which means my design can greatly help the making of the model. As a result, I believe I won’t need a lot of materials, apart from clay and I can use actual Liquorice Allsorts sweets to build the model. I can maybe exaggerate it by making it a lot bigger than Bertie Bassett or adding more than the original character. That I believe is my biggest advantage; it will also be simple to animate, as all the materials will be held together in place to create an effective model. I also believe that I won’t have any time restraints, as the model will be made of sweets and therefore easy to model. Also, the actions and moves of my character will be easy to animate, as they are fairly simple. The only obstacle I believe I will face is designing the model and trying to add my own visual spin to the original Bertie Bassett character, as I don’t want to make it a direct clone. Many of my competitors are doing characters based on British culture, like Tea and London culture so I will have to ensure that my character stands out from the rest by designing and animating my model efficiently and effectively, as well as adding my own identity to the character. Production time won’t be an issue for me unless I create my model and animate on time.
