Character Essay Conclusion Paragraphs

Conclusion paragraphs are used to end an essay. Think of it as the final chance to state your case.

Just as lawyers do towards the end of a trial, writers need to reiterate the important points presented in the “evidence. ” • Before reviewing the examples, please keep in mind the following: • The thesis statement must be restated at the beginning of the paragraph. This means you must find a new way to state thesis; do not just copy the original thesis from the introduction paragraph. • Original thesis statement: In fact, by encouraging me to engage in new activities and create good habits, positive influences from friends have strengthened my character. • Restatement: Clearly, positive influences from friends have introduced me to thrilling activities and encouraged me to form better habits; as a result, my character has grown stronger.

More to remember… • Remember not to introduce any new information in the conclusion paragraph. At this point, it is too late for new information! • The conclusion paragraphs are pretty short. Usually 4 sentences or so will get the job done.

Three different methods can be used when writing a conclusion paragraph. Note: I’ll have handouts available for you to use when writing the conclusion paragraph.

Method #1 Summarize the information previously presented. Clearly, positive influences from friends have introduced me to thrilling activities and encouraged me to form better habits; as a result, my character has grown stronger. By pushing me outside of my comfort zone, my friends have taught me to take calculated risks on my own terms. Additionally, by following their good examples, I established good habits that have carried me through my experiences with further education. These positive influences from friends have had lasting effects on my character.

Method #2 Encourage your reader to take action or challenge him/her to think. To summarize, negative influences from friends will cause us to make poor decisions and damage our relationships with others; however, it will also improve character. Unfortunately, we can not decide when we are going to be exposed to this powerful force. We can, however, decide how we are going to respond to it. Instead of just giving in to negative peer pressure, we all need to become strong enough to resist it. Learning to do so will lead to an improved character.

Method #3 Convince the reader of your position. Clearly, positive influences from friends have introduced me to thrilling activities and encouraged me to form better habits; as a result, my character has grown stronger. For all of us, it is obvious that we benefit from the influences our friends have on our lives. Instead of running from these influences, we need to embrace them. Positive peer pressure helps us become the people we are meant to be.
