Kinds of Union Arrangements n n Closed Shops: employer hires ONLY union members Union Shop: workers do not have to be part of a union to be hired, but must join after and remain a member for as long as they keep their jobs Modified Union Shop: workers do not have to belong to a union to be hired and cannot be made to join one to keep their job Agency Shop: does NOT require a worker to join in order to get or keep a job BUT workers must pay union dues to help pay collective bargaining costs
Collective Bargaining: representatives from both sides meet and a compromise must be reached n n Grievance Procedure: provision for resolving issues that may come up later Mediation: process of bringing in a neutral 3 rd person or persons to help settle the dispute Arbitration: process in which both sides agree to place their differences before a 3 rd party where decision will be accepted as final Fact-Finding: an agreement between the union and management to have a neutral 3 rd party collect facts about a dispute and present nonbinding recommendations
Collective Bargaining Continued Injunction: a court order not to act n Seizure: temporary takeover of operations (to allow the government to to negotiate with the union)…. very rare! n Presidential Intervention n
