ADD Persian Empire first started way back in 400 BC. • LATER in the 1500 s They broke way from Islamic Empire because of religious differences • In 1500 s Shiite (She-ite) Muslims, enemies of the Ottoman Turks, conquered land of present day Iran under the first leader Ismail who declared himself founder of Safavid dynasty. • Safavid rulers required all subjects to accept their form of Shiite Islam How was this different than Ottoman Empire? • (Shiites differ from Sunni in arguing over who was the true successor of Mohammad, the original prophet of Islam. ) • Safavids ruled Iran and most of present day Iraq and part of Arabia from 1500 s until 1740 s. Broken up under Western Europe Imperialism later….

(present day Pakistan) • Biggest ruler of the Moguls was Akbar the Great ruled in early 1500 s encourage religious tolerance with the native Hindus (who worship many gods) • Another Mogul leader, Shah Jahan, created the Taj Mahal, the worlds greatest tomb, and symbol of his power. • Filled the marble with semi precious stones, created large dome top and reflecting pools around it. • in honor of his wife who died in childbirth (her 14 th!!) • Hindus and others in India eventually rebel and weaken Mogul rule in most of India • Add: Moguls ruled N India until 1700 s, covered 1. 25 million sq. miles and ruled over 150 million subjects at its height…(nearly ¼ of world’’s population at the time!)
