Chapter 6 Performing Basic Vehicle Maneuvers
4. 1 Steering, Signaling, and Changing Lanes
Steering Straight Forward Focus on your target area n Oversteer n – Turning the wheel too much n Understeer – Not turning the wheel enough
Steering Straight Backward n n n Shift into reverse Make sure you are looking out the back window Put left hand at top of wheel, and right hand on arm rest or on the back of the passenger seat Use brake to adjust speed Turn the wheel in the direction you want the back end to go

Changing Lanes Watch mirrors for a gap in traffic n Signal n Head check n Move the vehicle, if clear n Make sure vehicle does not drift in lane n Maintain speed if possible n
6. 2 Making Turns and Turning the Vehicle Around
Steering Push-pull n Hand-over-hand n Left Turn n – Pull down with left, push up with right – About ¼ of way down, left hand goes over right n Right Turn – See above, just opposite
Making Left and Right Turns n n n Do you have to stop? Keep the car moving Steps – – – Signal Start slowing down (10 to 12 mph by crosswalk) Look for hazards Start your turn Accelerate
Backing Left and Right See backing straight n Just turn the wheel more n Make sure to know what is going on around the vehicle n
Turnabouts Turn the vehicle around to go in the opposite direction n Pull into the drive way on the left side and back out n
6. 3 Parking
Angle Parking Tiger’s Den n Signal n Move forward until you can see the center of the space with out your line of sight being cut by the white line n Turn sharply n Straighten wheels when the vehicle is straight in the space n
Perpendicular Parking Mario’s/Wal-Mart n Be about 8 ft away n Signal n Start turning when your front bumper passes rear taillight of vehicle next to the parking space n Straighten wheels when you are centered in the space n
Leaving a Parking Space When front bumper is even with back bumper of car next to you, start turning n Back until you are out of the space n Keep in mind you may have to make adjustments, depending on space n
Parking on Hills n n Signal Move towards curb Stop parallel to curb (8 to 10 inches) Turn wheels – Up, and Away – Touchdown n n Idle towards curb Let tires bump curb Shift into park Set parking brake (only during warm months)
Leaving the Hill n Downhill – – – – n Release parking brake Shift into reverse Check behind you Back up a little Turn wheels away from the curb Shift into drive Signal, head check, and if it’s clear leave the curb Uphill – Shift into drive – Signal, head check, and if it’s clear leave the curb
