Great Fear • Tales of attacks on villages spread panic throughout France • Rumors that government troops were taking peasant’s crops • Peasants took out anger on Nobles – Attacked their homes and stole grain from storehouses.

Declaration of the Rights of Man • Issued by the National Assembly • Modeled on American Declaration of Independence – Proclaimed all male citizens were equal before the law – Freedom of religion – Taxes paid by all people – Slogan: “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. ”

Women March on Versailles • King and his family were at the castle in Versailles outside Paris • Women march to Versailles to bring the king and his family back to Paris • Women march shouting “Bread” • For 3 years King and family were held as prisoners in the Tuileries Palace

Civil Constitution of the Clergy • National Assembly put the French Catholic Church under state control – Took over and sold church lands to pay off France’s debt – Bishops and priests became elected officials that were paid by salary

Constitution of 1791 • Created by the National Assembly • Formed a limited monarchy instead of an absolute monarchy • Legislative Assembly had the power to make laws, collect taxes, and decide on issues of war and the people • Would later fail- remember there are 4 phases of the French Revolution

The French Plague • Other European Monarchs worry that the ideas of revolution would spread • Emigres were not permitted in many countries – Nobles and clergy who fled revolutionary France • Austria, Prussia, Britain went to war with France from 1792 -1815 to try and restore the French monarchy.
