Jeanie’s Story “It took me about 18 years to accept the skin I'm in and 2 more years to come to love it. When I was in middle school, I started putting relaxers on my hair so that I could look like my peers and relatives… I remember going to marching band practice wearing long pants and long sleeves in 80+ degree weather so I wouldn't get any darker. I remember being called a racial slur in class within 5 feet of a teacher who turned his head the other way. I remember that "I was the problem student". I remember that I received an award my senior year called the "Perseverance Award. ” So basically, an award for making it out of there alive. I'm not posting this for your sympathy. I'm posting this to give you perspective and show you the experiences of a person of color… Two people can experience the same thing in completely different ways. ”
