Chapter 6 Algebra Lesson 3 Solving TwoStep Equations
Chapter 6: Algebra Lesson 3 - Solving Two-Step Equations THEORY
How do I do the ‘two-step’? You are going to break up the equation into its two steps. #1. The first step will always be either adding or subtracting. IOW: Remember to get rid of the lone number! #2. The second step will always be either multiplying or dividing.
Two-Step: 2 x + 3 = 13 -3 -3 2 x 2 x = 10 2 =5 Level 1 Step 1: Get rid of the lone number plus 3 Subtract 3 from both sides! Step 2: Separate the 2 from the x. The opposite of x times 2 is x divided by 2.
Two-Step: x - 10 = 2 5 +10 5 • x 5 x = 12 • 5 = 60 Level 1 Step 1: Get rid of the lone number minus 10 Add 10 to both sides. Step 2: Separate the 5 from the x. The opposite of x divided by 5 is x times 5.
Two-Step: -1 x + 4 = -9 - 4 -4 -1 x =-13 -1 = 13 Short-cut: -x = -13 or if –x = 13 x = -13 Level 2 Step 1: Get rid of the lone number plus 4 Subtract 4 from both sides! WAIT! –x is the same as -1 x. Step 2: The opposite of negative one times x is divided by negative one.
Two-Step: -2 x - 1 =11 3 + 1 +1 3 • -2 x -2 3 x x = 12 • 3 1 -2 = 36 -2 = -18 Level 3 Step 1: Get rid of the lone number minus 1 Add 1 to both sides! Step 2: The opposite of times negative - 2/3 is divided by -2/3. Remember the fraction rule that says we can multiply by the reciprocal.
Two Step: Level 1 1) 2 x + 7 = 15 2) 8 = -3 y - 1 3) m – 5 = -1 3 4) 30 = 16 + z 5
Two Step: Level 2 and 3 1) -x + 2 = 3 3) 6 – 1. 2 x = 7. 4 2) -6 – m = 7 4) -2 = 5 – 3 x 4
