Legal Duties
Obey laws Most important duty n Helps people get along, prevents accidents, sees that resources are used fairly n If we don’t obey laws then the government will not have any control n
Pay Taxes Everyone must pay taxes n The money is used to help the community, state, and Nation n Pays employees, maintains army, paves roads, police, and firefighters n
Defend the Nation All men age 18 -25 must register with the government n If the country has a draft and you are chosen then you must go serve in the military or go to jail n
Serve in Court Must serve on a jury if asked to do so n May be excused if they have a good reason n You also must serve as a witness at a trial if ask n
Attend School Must attend school until the age of 16 n The government don’t want a lot of dumb people in the country n If you get a good education then you make more money and pay more taxes n An education can help you make informed decisions n

Be informed n Know what the government is doing n Read books, magazines, newspapers, internet, and TV
Speak Up and Vote Make your concerns known n Write, email, or call a representative n Join a political group n VOTE n This is the most important responsibility n
Respect others’ Rights Show respect for others and their property n Do not do anything that others might find offensive n For example: playing music to loud, allowing a dog to run free, vandalizing property n
Respect Diversity Even if you disagree with their lifestyle they have the same rights that you have n You must practice tolerance n All citizens are equal and should be treated the same n
Contribute to the Common Good n Give time, effort, and money to help the community to make it thrive
