Chapter 5: Lesson 1 Caring for Your Teeth, Skin, Hair, and Nails By: Mr. Byrne
Rationale Why You Need to Know This!!! � You will have those teeth, skin, hair, and nails the rest of your life. � What you do now will affect your teeth, skin, hair, and nails in the future. � Proper care of teeth, skin, hair, and nails will be less expensive in the long run!!! (Less medical bills).
Tooth Care � To keep your gums healthy, Brush daily. Do this at least twice a day, but if possible, brush after every meal. � Fluoride – A substance that helps prevent tooth decay. � Flossing is also important. It removes food trapped between your teeth and along the gum line that rinsing and brushing miss. � Be sure to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes every time!!!!
Tooth Decay � Bacteria live in your mouth. When this combines with saliva and sugar, plaque forms. � Plaque – A thin, sticky film that builds up on teeth and contributes to tooth decay.
Tooth Decay Cont… � Unremoved plaque may also harden and become tartar. � Tartar – Hardened plaque that threatens gum health.

Your Skin Cont… � 5 main important functions: ◦ Waterproofing. ◦ Vitamin D Formation. ◦ Protection. ◦ Temperature Control. ◦ Sensation.
Acne � Acne is a skin condition that occurs when active oil glands cause hair follicles to become Clogged. � To deal with acne: Gently wash the affected area at least 2 times daily with mild soap and warm water, avoid Touching the area, and avoid using Heavy Makeup or Creams.
Skin Care � Keep Clean. � Eat Properly and stay physically Active. � Protect yourself from the Sun. � Ultraviolet (UV) Rays: An invisible form of radiation from the sun that can penetrate and change the structure of skin cells. � If you’re going to be in the sun, wear Sun Screen and reapply it every hour. � Avoid Body Decorations such as tattoos and piercings.
Your Hair � Hair can be styled, cut, colored, and changed in many ways. No matter how you wear it, keeping your hair Clean and Healthy is worth the effort. � Daily Brushing keeps your hair healthy by removing dirt and spreading oils from the roots to the ends. � You should wash your hair regularly using Gentle Shampoo. � Dandruff – A flaking of the outer layer of dead skin cells on the scalp.
Your Hair Cont… � Dandruff is usually caused by Dry Skin. � Head Lice – Parasitic insects that live on the hair shaft and cause itching. � To avoid getting lice, don’t share Combs, Brushes, or Hats.
Nail Care � Your finger and toenails are made up of the same cells that make up your Hair. � Trim your nails with Nail Clippers. � Smooth rough nail edges with a Nail File or Emery Board.
How Do You Keep Your Teeth Healthy? � Brush twice per day for 2 min each time. � Use fluoride. � Floss daily.
How Do You Keep Your Skin Healthy? � Keep Clean. � Eat Properly and stay physically Active. � Protect yourself from the Sun. � Wear Sun Screen. � Avoid tattoos and piercings.
How Do You Keep Your Hair Healthy? � Daily Brushing. � Wash with gentle shampoo.
