Chapter 5: Documentation: Preparing the List of Works Cited pp. (126 – 133)
The “List of Works Cited” • What is the “List of Works Cited”? (You can also call it the “Bibliography” or “Literature Cited”, but this title is most appropriate) • How do I know what goes in it? (any resource you used to find information for your research paper) • When do I create it? (as you search for references – the ones not used can be deleted later) • Why have a “List of Works Cited”? (it documents the sources of the information you found so others can use it as well) • Who will use the “List of Works Cited”? (other scholars studying the same topic, perhaps) • What order is it in? (everything is put in alphabetical order according to the authors’ last names – if there is no author, the title is used to place the resource in the right place [do not include A, An, or The])
Placement of the List of Works Cited • The list appears at the end of the research paper. • Begin on a new page & number the pages, continuing the page numbers of the text and keeping to the same format. • Center the title “Works Cited” at the top of the page. • Double-space the title and all entries.
Begin each entry at the left margin; if an entry runs more than one line, indent the next lines ½ inch from margin (called a ‘hanging indent’).
Hanging Indent
Arrangement of Entries • Authors’ names are arranged alphabetically by last name then by first name. – Examples: Descartes, Rene De Sica, Vittorio Mac. Donald, George Mc. Cullers, Carson Morris, Robert Morris, William Morrison, Toni
Arrangement of Entries • If two or more entries with coauthors begin with the same name, alphabetize by the last names of the second authors listed. – Examples: Scholes, Robert, and Robert Kellog Scholes, Robert, Carl H. Klaus and Michael Silverman Scholes, Robert, and Eric S. Rabkin
Arrangement of Entries • If author’s name is unknown, alphabetize by title, ignoring A, An or The. – Example: • An Encyclopedia of the Latin American Novel • If the title begins with a numeral, alphabetize as if the numeral was spelled out. – Example: • 1914: The Coming of the First World War would be alphabetized under N for Nineteen Fourteen
MLA-Style Entry Author’s name as given in the work Every important word in the title is capitalized Title is italicized Some words in the publisher’s name are abbreviated • Medium of publication is recorded (Print- Diss – Web – Radio – Television – CD – Film – DVD – Performance – Photograph – Advertisement) • •

Remember: MLA is tricky. You must follow it exactly. You can’t memorize it. Always use a handbook with the most recent version of MLA. • Go to MLA. org if you want more help on electronic sources. • For more information, also try Purdue OWL: http: //owl. english. purdue. edu/ • •
