Chapter 5. 1 Work

Work: Definition Work is the transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes

Work: Definition Work is the transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object move Two conditions must be met to do work: 1. The object has to move, and: 2. The direction of movement must be in the direction of the applied force

Work and Energy When Work is done, a transfer of Energy occurs Remember: Energy

Work and Energy When Work is done, a transfer of Energy occurs Remember: Energy is the ability to do work. In order for someone or something to do work, it MUST have energy! This Corvette ultimately transfers the chemical energy of the gasoline to kinetic energy of motion. This results in the car’s engine doing work!

Calculating Work: Just like most terms used in physics, Work has an equation: Work

Calculating Work: Just like most terms used in physics, Work has an equation: Work W (W) = Force (N) * distance (m) = N*m The SI Unit for Work is the Joule (like Energy)

Suppose we get a 6” snowstorm: One driveway is plowed with a truck Which has done more work? Another equal sized driveway is shoveled by a child They both have done the same work!

Power Does this mean the child have the same power as the truck? NO!

Power Does this mean the child have the same power as the truck? NO! The truck can do the job MUCH faster than the boy with the shovel!

Definition of Power: Power is the amount of Work done in a certain amount

Definition of Power: Power is the amount of Work done in a certain amount of Time Power is also Energy transferred divided by the time it takes the transfer to occur The equations for Power areas follows: Power (P) = Work/time Power (P) = Energy/time The SI Unit for Power is the Watt (W) One Watt is equal to one joule/second

Changing Energy by doing Work: As 1. you know: Energy can be converted from

Changing Energy by doing Work: As 1. you know: Energy can be converted from one form to another 2. And work requires the input of energy. So…. 3. Work can result in a change of energy Can you give some examples of this?
