King George’s War • Also called the “War of the Austrian Succession” • Who: King George, European rulers • What: War between England, Holland & Austria vs. Spain, France & Prussia over Austrian throne • Where: Fought in West Indies, Canada and New England • When: 1739 -1748 Significance • War helped and hurt New England through prosper of trade with ships and sailors. They did have a lot of casualties. • Middle Colonies: Prospered in trade of flour
Genteel Culture • Who: Wealthy English colonists • What: Colonists who had money started to act more proper, using manners, addressing people properly and using better speech. Most wealthy had a “leisure time”, people would go to theatres, gamble at horse races, play billiards, etc. • Where: English colonies • When: Started around 1750 in colonies Significance • This “Refinement of America” was influenced by the British and widened gap between rich and poor
The Enlightenment • Who: European and colonial elite • What: Based on knowledge through reason. Studied principles of motion, stars & planets and gravity that eventually affected politics • Where: Started in Europe and spread to the colonies • When: Began around 1650 Significance • Affected political thought as well, people began to challenge their leaders. Had a major impact on education, common vocabulary and it unified the view of the world
