Chapter 4 Performing Basic Vehicle Maneuvers
Mirror Usage Inside Mirror (rearview) – adjust to see out the back window. Outside Mirrors – there are blind spots your can’t see with mirrors. The right side mirror says “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. ” Convex Mirrors – Not on all vehicles. They are smaller and round. They allow you to see more.
Backing Up Procedure This takes skillful use of the brake! 1. Backing up Straight – left hand at 12 o’clock and right hand over the seat while looking back. Camera in car? You can use 10 -2 hand position and look back. 2. Backing Left or Right – turn the wheel in the direction you want to go. Pull down on the steering wheel in the direction you want to go. Be aware of which way the front end will swing.
Signaling This is required by law to signal a change in direction!!! Turns and lane changes. 1. Signal 100 feet before the intersection you are going to make at turn at. 2. We have you signal around midblock because we want drivers following you to know early if you will be turning. 3. Watch for hand signals to make turns – usually someone on a bike. A. Left arm out and hand up = right turn. B. Left arm out and hand straight out = left turn C. Left arm out and hand down = slow or stop
Making Left and Right Turns If multiple lanes, turn into the nearest lane of traffic going the direction you are turning. Make sure to search your left, front, and right zones for any pedestrians or bikers. Stay centered in your lane. Do you know what a curb check is?
Making a Right Turn 1. Signal at midblock 2. Stay in the center of your lane. 3. When the front of your vehicle is even with the curb or edge of the road, start your turn. A. Oversteer – turning too much B. Understeer – turning too little
Making a Left Turn 1. Signal at midblock 2. Stay in the center of your lane 3. Imagine there is a pole in the middle of your left turn – drive around the pole. A. Oversteer – turning too much B. Understeer – turning too little
Lane Changes Use the SMOG method – use this when going 0 mph moving away from a curb or 80 mph changing lanes on the interstate. S – Signal – left other traffic know your intentions. M – Mirrors – use the mirrors in the direction you want to go. O – Over The Shoulder – look over the shoulder to the lane you are entering. G – Gradually change lanes – this is not a left or right turn.
Turnabouts 1. The best way to turn around is to drive around the Block if possible. 2. 3 point turnabout – find a driveway if possible A. You can pass it and back in, then drive out in the other direction. B. You can cross traffic driving forward, back up, then go. 3. U-turns – make sure it is legal and there is no traffic *Signs will mark illegal u-turns most of the time DO NOT attempt a turnabout under these circumstances 1. On a hill 2. On a curve 3. On a RR crossing 4. Not in poor visibility or heavy traffic
Parking – Angle, Perpendicular, Parallel Use reference points to help in all parking situations. 1. Reference Point - something inside or outside the vehicle to help you complete the parking maneuver. Also called standard reference points. 2. Standard Reference Points – points that are typical for most drivers. 3. Personal Reference Points - points you like to use because of your vehicle. 4. Forward Reference Points – this is when steering for the turn should begin.
Angle Parking 1. Check the space to make sure it is legal (Is it a handicapped parking space? ) 2. Signal your intentions. 3. Be 6 feet away from parked vehicles. 4. When you see down the stall, start your turn. 5. Drive in the center of the stall. Get close to the curb because you don’t want the back of your vehicle out in traffic. Practice finding a reference point so you don’t hit the curb or for when there is no curb.
Leaving an Angle Parking Stall 1. Always check traffic because you DO NOT have the right of way. 2. Reference Point – 1/3 of you vehicle is even with the back bumper of the vehicle next to you before you start turning. 3. Back into the first lane of traffic until your vehicle is straight down the road. 4. Straighten out the wheels and drive down your lane of traffic.
Perpendicular Parking 1. Check the space to make sure it is legal – is it a handicapped spot? 2. Signal your intentions. 3. Be 6 feet away from parked vehicles. 4. When your front tire is even with the first line of your stall, start your turn. This is a sharp turn! 5. Drive in the center of the stall. Get close to the curb so your vehicle doesn’t stick out into traffic.
Leaving a Perpendicular Stall 1. Always check traffic because you DO NOT have the right of way. 2. Reference Point – drive straight back until the front of your vehicle is even with the back of the vehicle next to you before you start turning. 3. Back into the first lane of traffic until you determine that you will not hit the vehicle next to you. 4. Straighten out the wheels and drive down your lane of traffic.
Parallel Parking 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. This is backing into a parking space between two vehicles on the side of the road. You need 6 feet more space than the length of your vehicle to do this successfully. Signal your intentions. Drive up to the vehicle in front and line up your front window. Look straight ahead and to the left – that should create a 90 degree angle. From there pick an object 45 degrees – could be a sign, tree, house, anything. Back up Turn all the way so you line up the inside mirror with the object you picked – then STOP. Straighten out the wheel and go straight back until your front bumper is even with the back bumper of the car in front of you. Turn the wheel all the way left so the front of your car swings into the parking area. Continue backing up so you are centered in the stall. You might need to make minor adjustments to center your vehicle.
Leaving a Parallel Parking Stall 1. First question to ask yourself – if you turn as sharp as you can, will you hit the vehicle in front of you? Yes – No – Maybe? 2. If it is a yes, then BACK UP! 3. Use SMOG to leave the parking stall and join traffic. 4. Remember – you DO NOT have the right of way. Parking Maneuvers Review https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=jvaz. H 0 g 9 Nqs

Uphill with NO curb – drive to edge of road, turn wheel to the right, shift to park, set parking brake. 3. Downhill with a curb – drive next to curb, turn wheel right, shift to neutral, slowly roll forward until the curb stops you, shift to park, set parking brake. 4. Downhill without a curb – drive to edge of road, turn wheel to the right, shift to park, set the parking brake.
