Chapter 4 Creating a Global Culture Exploring Culture
Global Culture ways of living that are shared by people around the world people may move and take their culture with them mass media and the Internet play a role influencing global culture pop culture also affects global culture development
Think…don’t write! If you had to move to another country and could only take 5 things with you, what would you take?
MIGRATION moving from one country/region to another people often take aspects of their old culture with them…material (clothing, heirlooms, etc. ) and non-material (beliefs, values, celebrations, etc. ) people are influenced by the culture of the place to which they move
Why do people move? PUSH FACTORS and PULL FACTORS PUSH FACTORS: motivate people to leave their homes Ex. ’s) war poor government lack of jobs poverty discrimination natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunami, etc. )
PULL FACTORS: draw people to another place to live Ex. ’s) equality human rights jobs/higher wages religious freedom pleasant climate
IMMIGRATION and EMIGRATION immigration: ▪ moving into a new country to live ▪ if you move from Iran to Canada, you have immigrated to Canada emigration: ▪ leaving a country and moving to another country to live ▪ if you leave Canada to live in Iran, you have emigrated from Canada internal migration: ▪ moving within your own country/region ▪ for example, moving from NL to Alberta
all types of MIGRATION affect POPULATION GROWTH… see table on p. 50 of text
Rural-Urban Migration moving from rural areas to live in larger places (countryside to cities, for instance) common throughout the world, not just Canada NOTE: Statistics Canada defines an urban area as a city/town having 1000 or more people Census: every 5 years Stats Canada counts the people in Canada and asks questions such as where people live, language spoken, work, etc.
Forced Migration In the past, in Canada, the first Europeans to come forced many of the Aboriginal people off their land. These Aboriginals had to find new places to live…this is forced migration. not prevalent in Canada today may result from war, forces of nature(famines, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. ) Refugees: people who are forced to leave their home to escape some danger or problem. (see p. 52 of text)
Spreading Culture via Technology printing press…books, magazines, newspapers, etc. telephones/cellphones radios television movies Internet (1994…World Wide Web was born!!) …all used to spread ideas …careful of information overload!!!
